Asynchronous computer-mediated communication (CMC) • Communication that takes place via networked computers. • Asynchronous CMC refers to CMC that takes place in a delayed fashion. • E-mail • Text & formatted documents (attachments) • One-to-one/many-to-many (discussion lists) • subscription • Bulletin boards • No subscription • Threaded (on the site) • Asynchronous CMC “the mother of all Internet applications”

Synchronous CMC • synchronous= real time • Participants must be sitting on at the computer at the same time. • One-to-one/many-to-many • Internet-based chat (chat rooms/one-to-one, small-group) • MOO (communication + simulated activity) • Daedalus Interchange (allows people in a computer laboratory to discuss ideas using a split-screen interface) • Voice/video (conferencing)

Hypertext • A repository of linked multimedia documents. • WWW is based on principles of hypertext(nonlinear, linked or layered form of information organization whereby documents in a database are connected via hyperlinks. • WWW provides access to information • Allows publishing (newsletter, report, magazine, website, blog, etc.)
