  2. Pluto and Neptune • Pluto and Neptune switch orbits every 248 years. When Pluto was a considered a planet, it was the eighth planet for 20 years every 248 years.

  3. Size of Pluto • Pluto is the smallest planet. • Its diameter is 1/5 of the diameter of Earth. Only Mercury is smaller than Pluto.

  4. Mass of Pluto • Pluto is very light. It is 500 times lighter than Earth. It is the lightest planet in the Solar System.

  5. Gravity on Pluto • Gravity on Pluto is only 8 percent of the gravity on Earth. • A 100 pound person would weigh only 8 pounds on Pluto.

  6. Length of a day and year on Pluto • The length of a day on Pluto is 6.39 days on Earth. • A year is 247.7 Earth years.

  7. Pluto’s Orbit • Pluto is 39 times farther from the Sun than Earth is.

  8. Atmosphere • Pluto’s atmosphere is probly mostly nitrogen with a little carbon monoxide and methane.

  9. TEMPERATURE ON PLUTO • Pluto’s temperature may range between -396°F to -378°F (-238°C to -228°C, or 35 K to 45 K). • The average temperature is -393°F (-236°C = 37 K).

  10. Size of Pluto • Pluto is the smallest planet. • Pluto is smaller than the 8 other planets.

  11. Interior surface • Pluto is so far away that is it very hard to see the planet, so we can't tell how much of the surface is covered with ice. • Pluto may also be covered in rock and ice

  12. Discovery • Pluto was discovered after the 8 planets and was originally considered a planet itself (until 2006). • This planet was eventually found by the American astronomer Clyde w. Tombaughin in 1930 and named Pluto.
