ALCOHOL AWARENESS • Almost 70% of freshmen ever drank alcohol and users were more likely to believe that their friends and parents approved of their drinking. • Almost one half of the alcohol users in the freshman batch of students began drinking prior to age 15 and these early users were most likely to have existing alcohol related problems. • Almost one half of the freshmen had binged once in a life time and had driven after drinking. • Colleges and universities have inherited a population of students who arrive with established patterns of alcohol use and related problems. BEHAVIORAL MANIFESTATIONS OF ALCOHOL INGESTION • With 1 to 2 drinks (.01-.05 g/dL BAC) - euphoria and perceived reduction in anxiety • With 3 to 5 drinks (.06-.10 g/dL BAC) - judgment and motor coordination impaired, sometimes increased aggression • With 10 to 13 drinks (.20-.25 g/dL BAC) -- sedation • With 0.30 g/dL BAC -- memory impairment and loss of consciousness • With 0.40 to .50 g/dL BAC -- depressed respiration , coma, death. ALCOHOL EDUCATION PROJECTS ATEASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY • The Theater Group Close up shows depicting the negative consequences of alcohol drinking in college, catering 3000 people as an awareness campaign. • The Greek Student organization event related to overuse called “GLASS”. • Surveys by the National Collegiate Health assessment from students randomly chosen from the University Campus. • Meijer mania and homecoming tailgating involving students, faculty and alumni. • Alcohol screening and assessments, national alcohol screening day in March and April each year. • Referral based services
Why is an alcohol education Project necessary? Purpose: The alcohol education project is designed to better inform the incoming students , freshmen and undergraduates , their family members, faculty, staff , alumni In higher education settings about alcohol social norms and address the problems of abuse.
