  1. Jesus Fills our Thirst Sermon #3 For Resolution to Anger

  2. Thirsty Sermons: • Jesus Fills Our Thirst For: • Meaning • Patience • Resolution in Anger • Control • Balance • Peace During Stress • Comfort in Worry • Love

  3. Matthew 5:6 • “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” • A desire to be right with God that is natural, continuous, and primary. • Resolving Anger is a part of righteous living.

  4. Words about Anger • Soft Answer: • Psychology has proved that if you keep your voice soft you will not escalate anger. Psychology has accepted as scientific the old Biblical injunction, “A soft answer turns away wrath.” —Les Giblin

  5. Quotes: • I will not permit any man to narrow or degrade my soul by making me hate him. • An angry man is seldom reasonable; a reasonable man is seldom angry. • A man is about as big as the things that make him angry. • The greatest remedy for anger is delay. • Never go to bed mad. Stay up and fight.-- Phyllis Diller

  6. Questions: • Anger is a part of every culture of every time. • It is an aspect of humanity so when is it a sin? • How does Jesus fill our thirst for resolving anger?

  7. Definition: • ANGER (NIV Bible Dictionary) The English rendering of at least ten biblical words, of which the most common is Heb. aph, which could also mean "snorting."

  8. For Us Today: • There is a type of anger that is sinful • And a type that is following the character of God • It is very important to know the difference.

  9. Genesis 4:2-7 • The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. • GE 4:6 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."

  10. Angry People! • Esau (Ge 27:45). • Simeon and Levi (Ge 49:5-7). • Moses (Nu 20:10-11). • Balaam (Nu 22:27). • Saul (1Sa 20:30). • Ahab (1Ki 21:4). • Naaman (2Ki 5:11). • Asa (2Ch 16:10). • Uzziah (2Ch 26:19). • Haman (Est 3:5). • Nebuchadnezzar (Da 3:13). • Jonah (Jnh 4:4). • Herod (Mt 2:16). • Jewsin the synagogue (Lk 4:28) • People surrounding Stephen (Ac 7:54)

  11. Identifying Sinful Anger • Four Traits: • One: Sinful anger is retaliatory and combative in its purpose. • It is of the “get even” spirit like when James and John wanted to call down fire on the Samaritans in Luke 9:55. • “The moment you start hating a person, you become his slave because he now controls you.”

  12. Identifying Sinful Anger • Two: Sinful anger is born of intolerance. • Jonah was furious with God that he would save the NinevitesJonah 3:10-4:4. • … I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. • … Jonah 4:4 But the LORD replied, "Have you any right to be angry?"

  13. Sinful Anger • Three: Sinful anger is infectious. • Proverbs 22:24-25 says: “Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared.”

  14. Sinful Anger • Three: Sinful anger is infectious. • Romans 12:17-21 where he says: • … On the contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.“ 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

  15. Sinful Anger • Four:Sinful anger comes from inappropriate places. • We have this anger as a reaction, because anger is a secondary response to a primary cause. So we may be reacting to frustration, inadequacy, stress, overtiredness, irritation, selfishness, greed, etc…and these lead to expressions of anger.

  16. God’s Anger • God’s anger, and the type of anger that God wants us to have, comes from his character. God is Holy and God is Love and from these two traits come his anger. Anger is his logical response to injustice or unrighteousness. • We will use the terms distorted and definitive to identify improper and proper anger.

  17. Object Lesson • Anger needs to be processed and resolved so that its impact is limited.

  18. What Can We Do? • How can Jesus fill our thirst for resolution to anger? • We need to learn self-control and helpful processing methods. We need to seek God’s character and the power of the spirit to transform us. • Because distorted anger feels the same and is based on your perception of a wrong help is needed in order to respond appropriately.

  19. Definitive or Distorted Anger

  20. Definitive or Distorted Anger

  21. Processing Distorted Anger • First, share information. Tell the other person about your concern in a non-condemning way, and request an opportunity to talk about it. Your goal is to make the other person aware of your emotions, your thoughts, and your concerns. From this you can move to a resolution.

  22. Processing Distorted Anger • Second, gather information. When you properly gather the facts, you determine whether your anger is definitive or actually distorted. When gathering facts, tone, intent, and body language all say more than the words “What am I missing here!” Be specific and keep it related to the event, “Why are the dishes still on the table?”

  23. Processing Distorted Anger • Third, negotiate understanding. Express your struggles in a non-threatening manner, requesting understanding. Then listen to the other person’s response. This requires an honest, focused conversation.

  24. Processing Distorted Anger • Fourth, request change. Many people will respond well to such a request, as long as you neither demand nor manipulate for change. A generally positive relationship with the other person will make them more open to such a request.

  25. The Balloon • Anger does not just go away. It needs to be processed. • Jesus provides the motivation to process our anger because of his patience with us and the Holy Spirit provides the ability to process anger so that it can become helpful in our relationships.

  26. Conclusion: • Anger can be a positive aspect in relationships as an identifier of things that need addressed and changed. • Anger is a moral neutral but our expression of anger is not morally neutral. • Let’s go to God for direction so that in our anger we do not sin.

  27. This Week: • This week notice the difference and if you are really prone to anger than keep an anger journal. • Go to Jesus for the motivation to change and the Holy Spirit for the ability.

  28. Next Week • Jesus fills our thirst for control.
