  2. Philippians 2:1-11 • vv. 6-11 most familiar in Philippians. • Some of most well known in NT. • Also, some of the most discussed.

  3. Philippians 2:1-11 • Church having to deal with two big issues. • The threat of false teachers. (3:2) • A diverse church with the possibility of factions. (Acts 16) • They needed to work toward unity for the sake of their church and their mission.

  4. A. Humility • Opposite of pride? • One who gives way to aggressive forces? • Is it weakness?

  5. A. Humility • “something to be grasped.” • Harpagnos • In secular Greek it could mean robbery or rape. (KJV translation reflects this)

  6. A. Humility • More recently found to be a synonym of • Harpagma • “an advantage” • “He did not consider equality with God something to be exploited.” (NRSV)

  7. B. Service • v. 7 • In vv. 6 and 7 he uses “morphe’’ • He was God in essence; He became a servant by choice. • Mark 10:45

  8. C. Obedience • Phil 2:8 • He obeyed to the uttermost. • He had a passion to follow the pattern and commands of the Father. (John 5:19)

  9. Why Is This Important For Us? • Church 100 years old. • No splits. • No divisions now.

  10. Why Is This Important For Us? • This is the year we are going to seek to launch forward in many concrete ways. • It is imperative that we protect and build our unity. • We must live up to our name; it must define our life and our mission.
