  7. England Becomes Protestant Henry VIII (8th) – king of England – against Luther – devote Catholic Why did this change? Political Reasons – Henry VIII needed a male heir (successor) Henry’s father became King of a long Civil War and Henry feared that war would break out again if he did not have a son. Henry was convinced that his wife, Catherine, would not have a another child Wednesday, September 25

  10. Calvinism John Calvin – took Luther’s idea – people are sinners and can’t earn salvation. Predestination: God has predetermined who will be saved and it is only an “elect” few. Theocracy: government controlled by a religious leader Geneva – city in Switzerland – strict rules, severe punishments for rule breakers (burning at the stake) However, many saw as model city of moral citizens Thursday September 26
