  1. Quote… • "'It'll show you have I've gotten to feel about - things. Well, she was less than an hour old and Tom was God knows where. I woke up out of the ether with an utterly abandoned feeling, and asked the nurse right away if it was a boy or a girl. She told me it was a girl, and so I turned my head and wept. 'All right,' I said, 'I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool - that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.'“ (13?) • What does this passage tell the reader about Daisy's character and what her life has taught her about her place in society? • How else do you see this exhibited in Daisy's actions throughout the novel?

  2. Theme… • Topic: Hollowness in the 1920’s: • In your opinion, does Fitzgerald create an accurate representation for the hollowness of the 1920s? • Why or why not?

  3. Symbolism… • What is the significance of the GREEN light across the water from Gatsby's house? • Why might Fitzgerald have chosen green instead of another color? How would another color change the symbolism?

  4. Theme… • Emptiness of life: • Do you think Gatsby would agree with Nick's assertion of Gatsby's final thoughts - that his life is now meaningless without Daisy? • What do you think the novel is trying to say about having dreams and goals?

  5. Quote… • Nick: • "'They're a rotten crowd,' I shouted across the lawn. 'You're worth the whole damn bunch put together.' I've always been glad I said that. It was the only compliment I ever gave him, because I disapproved of him from beginning to end.“ • Why do you think Nick now claims to disapproves of Gatsby, since he has spent most of the novel making him out to be a man of culture and sophistication? • Are there any immediate events that you think changed NIck's mind?

  6. Symbolism… • Dr TJ Eckelburg'seyes: • Who does Wilson assert is really looking out of Dr TJ Eckelburg's eyes? • What is gained and what is lost by the circumstances surrounding this assertion (page 102)? • How does this affect what the reader is meant to think of the symbolism in the novel?

  7. Theme • Lies • Do you feel that Nick is a reliable narrator? • What points in the novel lead you one way or the other?
