PIRATES AND GERMAN TANKERS

On March 29, 2009, seven suspected pirates were apprehended by German authorities after they fired upon a navy tanker in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia. This incident, involving the German ship and assistance from other EU and NATO vessels, has raised significant international concerns about the rising trend of piracy in the region. Countries such as the USA, Japan, and China have responded by deploying naval forces to the area, highlighting the ongoing issues of maritime security amidst lucrative piracy activities that have increased in the past few years.

  6. WHY • This was an important event because it has helped raised concerns about piracy internationally. Pirating off Somalia has been increasing over the past four or five years because fishermen have realized that pirating is more profitable than their occupation. In response a number of countries, including the United States, China , and Japan, have deployed navy ships to the region.

  7. HOW • This event relates to our class because our class has been currently learning about warfare and alliances. Piracy isn’t exactly a war, but it is still a problem that affects the world as a whole. Also, although the countries deploying navy ships to the coast of Somalia is not necessarily an alliance, they are still working together to achieve peace.
