  1. A Vision for FLEXspace: Flexible Learning Environments eXchange Creating a new Community of Practice for an Open Access, Peer Reviewed Learning Space Repository Lisa Stephens Senior Strategist – SUNY Academic Innovation Joseph Moreau CTO & Vice Chancellor – Foothill-De Anza Community College District Mark McCallister Associate Director - Office of Academic Technology, University of FloridaClare van den Blink Director - Academic Technologies, Cornell University

  2. Roots of FLEXspace: • Committed Stakeholders • Began with the • SUNY Innovative Instruction Pilot • Followed by a national “listening tour” • CCUMC • NMC Horizon Summit • ELI Annual Meeting • Sloan C - MERLOT

  3. Strategic Level Project Value “Why should we invest resources in this project?” • Opportunity Cost - Demonstrate/Measure ROI • Supports agile renovation cycles • Content capture for new educational delivery platforms (Dev. Edu., Online, Tutorial) • Design standards to support active learning • Promotes consistent understanding of terminology across various instructional support disciplines • Synergy with other national efforts (ELI, SCUP)

  4. Operational/Functional Project Value “How does this help functional education needs?” • Open Education Repository • Built on Successful Proof of Concept • Engages Best Practices • Offers Peer Review • Robust, Reliable Hosting • Sponsorship Interest (envisioned as no-cost to .edu) • More than photos & video: offers web interaction, community building and referral opportunities

  5. Production Service Migration Database Taxonomies are the Key!

  6. Post Conferences ”Listening Tour” Taxonomy Refinement • Need to Revise original Taxonomyinto three separate Domains: • A/V Integration • Facilities Integration • Learning Space Typologies & Assessment • Incorporate details as necessary within each domain

  7. Original Taxonomy

  8. Data Upload Interface Separate “Input Domain” for each Taxonomy

  9. A/V Integration Taxonomy Review • Defining/refining A/V vs. Facilities Fields • Technology • Touchscreens • Conferencing Features • Projection/Display Systems • Local and enterprise-level content capture • Mobile initiatives • All basic features necessary to properly outfit a classroom based on pedagogical needs and facilities parameters

  10. Facilities and Architectural Review • Facilities Design and Functional Considerations • Fit and Finish Components • Natural and artificial lighting • Acoustics • Facilities engineering • All basic features necessary for aesthetic and code/safety compliance, maximizing A/V and pedagogical parameters

  11. Learning & Assessment • Typology Rubric Development • How can a taxonomy or rubric capture what teaching and learning activities are enabled or supported by the space and technology? • Assessment of Learning Effectiveness • Features necessary to respond to faculty and student teaching and learning needs. Additional challenge of expressing measurement (e.g. ELI “Seeking Evidence of Impact”)

  12. Learning & Assessment • Learning Activities • What is enabled by the space and technology features? • Foundational pedagogy of space approach • Inquiry based, learner driven inquiry, faculty directed/facilitated, etc. • Relationships enabled: teacher-student, student-student • Types of interactions, lectures vs. discussion, team collaborations, 1-1 partnerships, problem solving, etc. • Scale: size of space/environment, class size, number of locations • Related Information: • Participants characteristics • Location (face-to-face vs. virtual)

  13. Learning & Assessment

  14. Timeline To Production 1.0 On target to meet Beta rollout on Shared Shelf

  15. Other Production Dependencies & Progress • Interim and Long Term Governance • Bylaws drafted, Interim Board in place • SUNY serving as interim agent (MOU’s and contracts) • Integrating Sponsorship MOU • Tiered Analytics based on sponsor level* • Blog space • Opportunity for interaction • Showcasing vs. advertising • Developing Marketing & Communications Plan • Founding Sponsors to drive start up • Competition to drive repository population • *ARTstor Shared Shelf Release Features

  16. Collaboration Site http://sites.google.com/site/flexspacedev/

  17. “You Kiddin? I Want to Help Realize the Flexible Learning Environments eXchange!” Shared Shelf Live Link to FLEXspace (Password Required for Now) Other Resources: Quick Google Search Resources: “Sloan ET4 + FLEXspace” = Current Files “CCUMC + Repository” = Conference Demo “ELI + Poster Sessions + FLEXspace” = Multiple Files

  18. Feedback and Needs Assessment • Do architects resonate with this vision? • How might this resource be made stronger from AIA perspective? • How can FLEXspace best serve your resource needs?

  19. Thank You!
