  6. RESEARCH TOPIC: Construction Activity Pollution Prevention • There are many simple, inexpensive ways to reduce the amount of pollution produced at a construction site… • Use of water or non-toxic chemicals to control dust • Limit the driving speed of construction vehicles. • Cover air conditioning units, vents and registers with plastic, to prevent particles from getting inside. • Wash vehicles off at construction site.

  7. RESEARCH TOPIC: Storm Water Management WHAT? When it rains, storm water runoff that isn't properly managed can flow over impervious surfaces picking up pollutants along the way and washing them into rivers and streams. Storm water runoff can also cause flooding and erosion, destroy habitat and contribute to combined sewer overflows. WHY? Only 1% of Chicago’s rainwater is re-used. The other 99% is channeled back into lakes, rivers and streams, full of contaminants. 27,200 gallons of water fall on a one-acre yard during a one-inch rainfall. All of which can be re-used.

  8. RESEARCH TOPIC: Storm Water Management Rain Barrels Rain barrels are attached to downspouts which collect storm water running off of the roof.  An overflow system allows excess water to be directed elsewhere.  The rainwater collected in the barrel can be used for watering your plants or garden during dry times of the year and even to wash your car. Lawn and garden watering can make up 40 percent of your household water use during the summer months. Pricing Aquascape (St. Charles, IL) $250 City of Chicago Rain Barrel Program (Residency Required) $40 Installation Easy. Just a matter of shortening the downspout from the gutters to flow directly into the barrel through a downspout adapter ($15/Each). INCLUDE IMAGES ON LEFT SIDE AS NECESSARY TO SUPPORT RESEARCH, TYPICAL

  9. RESEARCH TOPIC: Storm Water Management Rain Gardens A rain garden is a natural or dug shallow depression designed to capture and soak up storm water runoff from your roof or other impervious areas around your home like driveways and walkways. Rain gardens can reduce storm water pollution by 30%. Most effective with native planting. Installation/Pricing Rain gardens can be very easy to install. Set-up can be as simple as pointing a downspout towards a garden. If the lawn is sloped away from the house, the rain garden can be up to 30 feet away from the house. Pricing for a 210 square foot Rain garden Mulch 2 cu. yd. $26/cu. yd. $52 Sand 6 cu. yd. $16/cu. yd. $96 Compost 6 cu. yd. $32/cu. yd. $192 Topsoil 12 cu. yd. $26/cu. yd. $312 Native Plants Approx. 30 $2-15/plant $60 Excavator 1 $160-200/day Cost Varies Approximate Cost $712-$1,102

  10. RESEARCH TOPIC: Sustainable Landscaping • WHAT? • Sustainable landscaping is a low-impact, low-maintenance and low-resource-use way to landscape. • WHY? • Benefits of sustainable landscaping are: • Enhance and protect ecosystems and biodiversity • Improve air and water quality • Reduce solid waste • Conserve natural resources • -Reduce maintenance costs

  11. RESEARCH TOPIC: Sustainable Landscaping Native Planting Native planting is a low cost alternative to traditional landscaping. That uses plants and grasses that are native or adaptable to the location they are going to be used. They typically have longer root structures, which work better at absorbing materials in the soil. The reduced maintenance benefits the environment, by not using fertilizers or excess amounts of water. Cost -Similar to traditional landscaping -Long term savings as much as 1/5 Application -Absorb area that usually goes to lawns -Which cuts down maintenance and pollution

  12. RESEARCH TOPIC:Sustainable Landscaping Trellis and Vines Having a trellis and vines on a portion of the house that receives direct sunlight will block the sunlight from heating up the outside (and inside) of the house. In the winter, when you need the sunlight for added heat, the leaves are off which allows the light to get through. These will be particularly useful in the new development, since freshly planted trees will need some time to produce shade. Cost: Minimal due to the fact that these can be built onsite by volunteers. Maintenance: The homeowner will have to trim the vines from time to time.

  13. RESEARCH TOPIC: Pervious Pavement WHAT? Pervious pavement allows water to run though the material to the soil, rather than being fed through the storm drainage systems which then runs into natural waterways. WHY? -Reduces storm water runoff -Replenishes groundwater -Requires less land to be set aside for drainage -Reduces pollutants in runoff -Reduces irrigation of area plantings based on the seepage of rain into the sub soil surfaces

  14. RESEARCH TOPIC:Pervious Pavement Pervious Asphalt Recommended for streets due to its high durability, reduced roadway noise, non-slippery when wet, extended pavement life. Disadvantages are that it needs to be vacuumed to avoid clogging, and it only works when it is installed correctly. Cost: 20% More than traditional asphalt. Cost can be offset by reducing the amount of storm water infrastructure, and not having to use as much land for water run-offs. (Meyer Materials, McHenry IL) Installation: Uses the same technique of application as traditional asphalt, but a experienced contractor is a requirement for it to work properly.

  15. RESEARCH TOPIC: Pervious Pavement Walkways and Patios Instead of paying the extra cost for pervious asphalt on short walkways or patios, traditional materials can be used using the right technique. Cost: Comparable to traditional methods, although it will require more labor. -By using gravel and spacing the tiles correctly, it will allow rainwater to run down to the soil. -Using traditional materials with a catch basin. By pitching the sidewalk or driveway, and letting the water run off into designated area (or garden) for drainage into the soil.

  16. RESEARCH TOPIC: Concrete • Making Concrete Construction Green • Modify the concrete mix • Pouring concrete more responsibly • Low or Non-VOC sealants, releases, curing agents • Green concrete systems • Insulated concrete forms (ICFs) • Pervious Concrete

RESEARCH TOPIC: Alternative Framing Methods • SUMMARY • According to the US Department of Energy's Office of Building Technology, advanced framing techniques can save $500 in material costs per 1200 square feet of house, shave 3 to 5 percent off of labor costs, and reduce annual heating and cooling costs by 5 percent .

  22. RESEARCH TOPIC: Alternative Framing Materials • 6.0 - CARPENTRY • Finger Jointed Studs • BENEFITS OF FINGER JOINTED STUDS • Finger Jointed Studs are approved by the IBC and IRC and are considered interchangeable with solid-sawn lumber in vertical applications. • Finger Jointed Studs can be made from shorter sections of wood including scrap and waste from other production activities.

  23. RESEARCH TOPIC: Alternative Framing Materials • SUMMARY • Finger Jointed Studs are a sustainable product that exceeds the vertical compression requirements of standard dimensional lumber. • Finger Jointed Studs that contain 3 or more joints per stud is increased stability. • The cost for Finger Jointed Studs can be slightly higher than conventional sawn dimensional lumber. Current price differences are approximately 3 to 8 percent. This relates to an average increase of 75 to 150 dollars per 1,000 board feet of lumber. • Most finger jointed lumber is only approved for vertical applications making it necessary to order standard dimensional lumber for any cross bracing, rafters, joists, blocking and other horizontal and angular applications.
