  6. Common Core • The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.   7. The Literacy Program • Imagine It! series: • 1. Guided Reading Working in individualized groups • 2. Phonics/ Writing Mini-Lessons/ Teacher Directed Reading • 3. Self-Selected Reading (D.I.R.T) • 4. Writing • 5. Spelling

  8. Reading Program • Determine Reading Level through TRC (text reading comprehension) • Teach small groups based on Instructional Reading Level • Take home reading based on Independent Reading Level

  9. Retelling Elements (Fiction): • Setting • Characters (Development) • Plot and Events • Problem / Solution • Author’s Purpose • Connection

  10. Retelling Elements (Nonfiction): • Organization- discuss text features (headings, titles, diagrams, table of contents, glossary, index, captions) • Main Idea/ Details • Vocabulary • What did you learn? • Connection/extension

  11. How you can help with reading at home… • Take home reading – independent reading level • Make it ENJOYABLE! • Prompt for strategies • Put the work on the child • COMPREHENSION – authentic retelling discussion (retelling hand)

  12. Before the Read • Look at the pictures before reading the story. When your child is stuck, say: • “Look at the picture.” • “What would make sense?” (meaning) • “Does that sound right?” (grammar) • “Does that look right?” (Do the letters match the word?) • Read it again and get your mouth ready for the first sound.” • “Look for a chunk you know?” (groups of letters) • “Try something, and keep reading for more information.” • “Reread the sentence.”

  13. Writing • Types of writing covered in first grade: • Observational and Recount/Narrative • Explanatory • Opinion • Our writing program consists of: • Writing journal • Mini-lessons: 5-10 minutes • Writing workshop

How you can help with writing at home… • High frequency words (known in a few seconds- flashcards, etc.) • Authentic and engaging writing activities • Grocery list • Letters/emails • Scrap booking • Standard and Temporary Spelling • SPELLING – list provided from county and Imagine It! (Spelling Homework)

  15. Math Highlighted Topics: • Number Sense (place value/representing numbers in multiple ways) • Equations and equalities • Math Facts and Math Families • Geometric Shapes • Addition / subtraction concepts • Time (analog and digital) / Calendar language • Fractions (whole/half/fourths)

  16. Math Assessments • Quarterly Written Math Tests • Performance Tasks • Teacher Observations

Level 1 – Students performing at this level do not exhibit sufficient mastery of first grade knowledge and skills successfully to complete most assignments. • Level 2 – Students performing at this level demonstrate inconsistent mastery of knowledge and skills. • Level 3 – Students at this level consistently demonstrate mastery of grade level concepts and skills. • Level 4 – Students at this level consistently perform in a manner that is clearly beyond the grade-level requirements and expectations.

  18. Homework • Take Home Reading – Write title of book and sign planners every night • Spelling – words will be listed in planner each week – test each Friday • Math homework – Weekly math sheet sent home
