  2. What is Chemistry? • Chemistry is the study of MATTER. • But what is matter…? How is it defined? MATTER is anything that has MASS and occupies SPACE.

  3. What are Chemists? • Chemists are scientists who study matter and it changes. Physical Changes Chemical Changes

  4. Why a “central” science? • The study of matter involves ALL areas of science. Can you name a few? • Organic Chemistry - contain carbon & hydrogen. • Inorganic Chemistry – contains everything else! • Physical Chemistry – study of matter & energy. • Biochemistry – study of processes in living things. • Analytical Chemistry – identification & composition.

  5. Which Category? • The natural sciences are grouped into two categories: biological sciences and physical sciences
