Miller, Iowa State University, DMR 0806507 AFM New Compound: Zr2Fe0.87(8)Ru5.13B2 NEW Ferro-(permanent) magnet; TC≈ 230 K; Predicted by theoretical calculations FM Favored by 375 meV Fe1.06S: Role of “extra” Fe atoms on stability and magnetism? Stability? The extra Fe atom provides more electrons so the Fermi level can reach a “near gap” in the energy level diagram and optimize Fe-Fe bonding; Magnetism? “FeS” has VERY small magnetic moments, diagonal antiferromagnetic ordering; Fe1.06Shas larger magnetic moments, concentric antiferromagnetically ordered rings moving out from the extra Fe atoms
