  3. Safety at Work • Each day many people get injured at work • Some can be permanently disabled • In a few cases people even die! • Don’t let this happen to you J.McHugh

  4. In This Lesson… • We will look at ways to avoid danger at work • We will try to prevent accidents • We will aim to keep you SAFE J.McHugh

  5. Your Placement • Depending on your placement, you will be presented with a set of unique challenges regarding health and safety • Your supervisor will give you any training needed to carry out your placement safely • YOU need to be aware of the risks! J.McHugh

  6. Health and Safety Policy • If your employer has more than 5 employees then there will be a H&S policy available • You can request this document J.McHugh

  7. Your Responsibility • By law, you must not interfere with, or misuse, anything provided for safety • Learn how to work safely and obey safety rules • Use all equipment and protective gear provided • Report things that look dangerous, damaged or faulty • Only use equipment or machinery that you have had the appropriate training to use J.McHugh

  8. Tidiness • Slips, trips and falls are the #1 cause of all accidents. • How can we prevent them? J.McHugh

  9. Hygiene • Dirt and contact with chemicals, oil and microorganisms (bacteria, viruses etc) can make you ill and can cause unpleasant skin complaints • ALWAYS • Wash hands with soap • Dry hands in driers or paper towels • Use barrier creams where provided • Seek medical advice for: • Rashes • Blisters • Ulcers • Etc • Tell your supervisor about any issues J.McHugh

  10. Protective Equipment & Clothing • Protective Clothing or Equipment may be issues to you as part of your placement • Some placements require you buy safety boots WEAR THEM! It’s not a fashion contest – it’s keeping you out of hospital J.McHugh

  11. Common Risks • What might some common risks be of: • Working at heights? • Operating machinery? • Using Tools or Knives? • Working With Animals? • Working With Hazardous Materials? • Working With Computers? • Lifting or Carrying? J.McHugh

  13. FIRE Safety • You need to know… • What to do if there is a fire • How to raise the alarm • What the alarm sounds like • Where fire exits are • Where the assembly point is • Don’t take risks. If you don’t know, ASK! J.McHugh

  14. First Aid Make sure you know what the first aid arrangements are Who are the first aiders? Where can they be found? Report any illness or injury to your supervisor immediately J.McHugh

Bullying and Harassment at Work • What is Bullying? • Constant fault-finding and criticism of a trivial nature • A constant refusal to acknowledge your achievements • Undermining you, your position and your potential • Being isolated, ignored and excluded by colleagues • Being humiliated, shouted at or threatened in front of others • What is Harassment? • Bullying happens over a long period of time and tends to be small events or incidents • Harassment may consist of one or a few more serious events or incidents. • The creation of hostile, unwanted or offensive environments • Sometimes related to race, gender, age or sexuality J.McHugh
