The Concept • A device that adjusts its orientation based on the sun's location to provide the user with the maximum amount of shade automatically. • The device will be similar in appearance to normal umbrellas with sensors and mechanics integrated inside.
Consumer Requirements • Must automatically provide shade • Able to operate during all sunlight hours • Easy to open/close • Able to be manually adjusted • Comfortable Height • Stable • Movable • Durable • Quiet • User friendly • Able to be used wherever normal umbrellas are used • Attractive
Design Specifications • Weight –must be less than 50 lbs. • Canopy Height –between 5' – 10' • Canopy Size –must provide adequate shade but not restrict view • Canopy Shape –must keep wind resistance to minimum • Range of Motion –must tilt up to 30° in any direction • Power source –must operate for 12 hours • Noise Level –must be kept below volume of normal conversation • Manual Force –must open/close with less than 10 lbs. force • Resistant to water • Resistant to corrosion • Must be stable in steady 30 knot wind
