History • 1994: The Philippines connects to the Internet through PHnet, a project funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST); PHnet initially connects ten universities and DOST • 1996: Commercial ISPs are established in the Philippines; most organizations, including universities, connect to commercial ISPs to access the Internet • 1997: PHnet connects to APAN through MAFFIN • 1999: DOST-ASTI becomes a partner of the Asian Internet Interconnection Initiatives (AI3), a project of the WIDE Project • 2002: DOST establishes and launches the PREGINET Project

Overview • PREGINET is: • the national research and education network of the Philippines • funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and supported by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) • Focus areas • Networking technologies • Distance education • ICT for Agriculture • Bioinformatics • Internet services and applications
