    1. Lesson 8: Prefixes dis- and de- When the prefix dis- or de- is added to a root or to a familiar word, the spelling of the root or the base word is not changed.

    2. disliked Considered disagreeable; considered something or somebody disagreeable or unpleasant.

    3. discovered Found out about; found out information that was not previously known.

    4. decay Become rotten or deteriorate; to decompose, or make something decompose, and become soft, crumbly, or liquefied.

    5. dispose Make willing; to make somebody willing or receptive to something.

    6. defeat Beat a competitor; to win a victory over a competitor, for example, in sports or business.

    7. destroyed Demolished; demolished or reduced something to fragments.

    8. decline Refuse invitation; to give a polite refusal to an invitation.

    9. defects Flaws; failing, blemish, or flaws, especially one that still allows the affected thing to function, however imperfectly.

    10. disabled Unable to perform particular activities; used to describe somebody with a condition that makes it difficult to perform some or all basic tasks of daily life.

    11. disappeared Vanished from sight; ceased to be seen, for example, by moving away, or going behind or into something.

    12. disappointment Feeling of being let down; a feeling of sadness or frustration because something was not good, attractive, or satisfactory as expected, or because something hoped for did not happen.

    13. dependent Not self-reliant; not able to live without support from other people, especially financial support from a parent or child.

    14. deduction Amount deducted; an amount that is subtracted from something; especially as an allowance against tax.

    15. disadvantages Bad things; some things that make a situation worse, or that makes somebody or something less effective or desirable.

    16. disguised Changed to prevent recognition; changed in appearance so as to prevent recognition.

    17. dissolved Became absorbed in liquid; to become absorbed in a liquid solution, or cause this process to occur to a solid.
