Before Conflict • Before 1820, British private traders in India had been able to buy opium from India and to sell to China • 1820 to 1830, opium trade to China increased, reaching as many as 18,000 chests a year • By 1836 about 1,800 tons of opium were imported to China annually and the volume kept rising
Cause of War • Estimated about 12.5 million addicts were in China in 1836 • Drain of silver because of the opium trade • China viewed the opium as a 'moral poison’ • Officials claimed that total prohibition was impossible • Chinese government attempted to end this trade
War Breaks Out • Open warfare between Britain and China broke out in 1839 • Second Opium War • China was defeated in both wars leaving its government having to tolerate the opium trade • Britain forced the Chinese government into signing the Treaty of Nanking and the Treaty of Tianjin
