  1. Contribution of PRAISEto AMY08 Jun Asanuma Terrestrial Environment Research Center University of Tsukuba

  2. PRAISE: a new research group • PRAISE • Progressive Research on Atmosphere-Biosphere-Hydrosphere and their Interaction in Semi-Arid Northeast Asia (tentative) • Targeted area: Eastern Mongolia • Scientific foci • Land-atm. interaction • Interannual & interseasonal variability of rainfall • Coordination & Cooperation • with Inst. Met. & Hydro., Mongolia • work as NE Asia regional group of MAHASRI • with CEOP, as a ref. sites and as semi-arid group • with Asia flux (as a registered sites) • with MAIRS arid/semi-arid group • with UNESCO-IHP groundwater program.

  3. Mongolia as the end reach of Asia Monsoon A Source of the precipitable water vapor using RCM (Sato et al, 2007, JGR) B A:Mongolia Local evaporation Monsoon related B:Inner Mongolia In Monglia, ・local: 30-40% ・Central asia, Siberia, and Atlantic ocean In inner Mongolia, ・more from Tropical oceans Difference in the source area

  4. Strong N-S gradient of precipitation and vegetation. => strong temporal variability of the land cover. Taiga Forest Grassland Gobi & Desert Intensive Obs. Region mainly steppe grassland and taiga forest Background: Vegetation (USGS-GLCC) Contour: Precipitation (CMAP,1979-2006, mm/year)

  5. Fairly larger recycling ratio Annual Mean Recycling Ratio 25year annual mean recycling ration at 105 km2 (Dirmeyer & Brubaker, 2007)

  6. Contribution to AMY 08 • Observations & Data • 2 full surface flux sites (grassland, forest) in eastern Mongolia: • as CEOP2-reference sites & AsiaFlux sites • 4 AWSs (rain, temp., wind speed, soil, etc.) • Research Targets • Land-atmosphere interaction: • especially, its biospheric and soil-moisture aspects. • atmosphere -> biosphere: intercomparison with other AsiaFlux sites all over Asia. • biosphere (esp. dyn. vegetation) <-> atmosphere: using LSMs • Interannual variability of precipitation and the monsoon. Grassland Forest
