  4. The Tories – The Conservative Party The Whigs-The Liberal Party • Oppose a strong Monarchy • Wanted a stronger Parliament • Believed strongly in hereditary succession • Wanted a strong monarchy

  6. The loss of the American colonies - The beginning • Causes: • No representation in Parliament for colonists • Additional taxes in colonies • No right to import some products from other countries • 1765-1766 – Violent protests against the Stamp Act • 1773 – The Boston Tea Party

  7. The loss of the American colonies. The war 1775 – The War of Independence began. July 4, 1776 – The Declaration of Independence 1783 – The Treaty of Paris, peace

  8. The Irish problem Rebellion in 1798 Was against the Kingdom of Britain. Got inspiration from revolutions in America and France. Ireland had autonomy but still bore allegiance to England. 1791 the United Irishmen were formed to break connections with England, to end religious discrimination, to wide the right to vote. Rebellion lasted for 3 months, claiming the lives of 30, 000 people. Result: Ireland was tied to England even more couple of years later.

  9. Theobald Wolfe Tone -The leader of The United Irishmen. He was captured during the rebillion. Committed suicide at the age of 35. The symbol of The United Irishmen

  10. The great Famine From 1845-1850. A disease infected a potato crop all over Ireland. Population dropped from 8 million to 6 million people. Effected the lower classes. Major problem was that the food was exported to England and Irish themselves had no money to by their food. About one million escaped. The British government did not to much to help those people.
