  2. Getting Physical • We had140 physical single user Windows computers for 1200 students • We experienced a 400 student (30%) enrollment increase over the last three years • We created a new 40 computer lab the first year to bring the total seat count to 180 • No more physical space for additional computer labs EITC 2/10/2011

  3. The Virtual Desktop Option • Goal: double the number of “seats” with no additional computer lab space • We asked for and received three grants • Provost grant for $60K • Engineering Dean for $90K • HP “switch blade” hardware grant worth $64K • Selected VMware View as the VDI software EITC 2/10/2011

  4. VDI Hardware • The Virtual Desktop Infrastructure includes: • Sufficient VDI Hosting servers with • Lots of RAM • Fast CPUs • High bandwidth networking • Very high performance (low latency-high iops) SAN • High bandwidth network • LAN • SAN EITC 2/10/2011

  5. VDI Software • The Virtual Desktop Infrastructure includes: • VMware View • Microsoft Data center (socket based server license) • Allows Microsoft server 2008 R2 on two servers • MS SQL server • vCenter server & VDI servers • Client OS licenses for the virtual machines EITC 2/10/2011

  6. VDI Hardware @ Iowa • HP C7000 blade server – 16 blades max • Ten BL460 G7 blades • Two sockets per blade – six core per socket • 96 GB RAM • 3 GHz CPU • Ten 10GB fiber networking • 2 console – 4 SAN – 4 LAN • Six 2.4KVA (max) power supplies in a 2N configuration EITC 2/10/2011

  7. VDI Hardware @ Iowa • 208 VAC, 3 phase 30A rack metered and switched power distribution units (PDU) • Street power • UPS power • 10 GB fiber optic network switches • LAN • SAN EITC 2/10/2011

  8. VDI Hardware @ Iowa • Dell EqualLogic 6010 XVS • 2.4 TB SAN storage • ~600 GB of which is SSD (solid state drive) • Auto migration of actively used data to the SSD • High iops - low latency for commonly used data • iSCSI storage array • Used for the golden OS image EITC 2/10/2011

  9. Software @ Iowa • VMware View premier • 2 ea 100 user licenses • M$ client OS licenses for 200 virtual computers • Covered by our campus M$ license W/student option • M$ SQL server license was added to our campus M$ SQL license agreement EITC 2/10/2011

  10. VDI @ Iowa • Our VDI beta 0.5 load is a ~250 GB OS image • A slightly modified lab load • No auto updates • Non-persistent • Graphics are PC over IP • Not the best for intense graphics • Some OS services and features disable to avoid storage growth EITC 2/10/2011

  11. VDI @ Iowa • Standard SAN storage • VMFS presents as a local disk • Two 2 TB volumes allocated for VDI users • Only stores data differences • Folder redirection for Documents and sub folders • Roaming profiles are currently still in use • IP addresses from a DHCP pool EITC 2/10/2011

  12. VDI @ Iowa • 50 VDI clients provisioned • 40 spare but powered off • 10 power up and available • Provisioning a VDI client takes ~10 min • Keeps a head room of 10 available clients as they are assigned to users • 200 client licenses • max simultaneous active users • Powered and unpowered but not used does not take a license • Available to students & faculty EITC 2/10/2011
