  3. ECONOMY • Newly industrialized economy • Exports make up for 2/3 of gross domestic product (GDP) • 2nd largest economy in Southeast Asia (Indonesia is first)

  4. Geography • Lowest point is the Gulf of Thailand at 0 m. • Highest point is Doi Inthanon at 2,576 m. • Slightly more than twice the size of Wyoming • Doi Nang Non is a land feature nicknamed “Mountain of the sleeping lady”. Gulf of Thailand >

  5. Religion • 94.6% of Thailand’s population are Buddhists • 4.6% are Muslim • 0.7% are Catholics

  6. Clothing • Generally families make their own clothing, or at least get it from a ear by textile • Women wear Pha sin, which consists of a head piece, a midsection, and a foot or lower piece. • Clothing is normally heavily decorated and florescent.

  7. Currency • National currency is the baht. • Used since 1897 • 1 baht=$0.03 • On the front is the supreme commander of the armed forces of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej.

  8. Art/Literature • Thai art is influenced heavily by Buddhism. • Thai drawings and paintings are usually book illustrations. • The decoration of temples and palaces is very popular. • Thai literature is internationally renowned.

  9. Government • The government of Thailand is a monarchy, but the parliament is elected by the people. • Prime Minister is the head of parliament • It used to be an absolute monarchy prior to 1932 there was a revolution. • Their current king is Bhumibol Adulyadej. He has served since 1946.

  10. Food • Thai food is very spicy. • It is popular all over the world. • Traditional Thai food has at least 3 of the following 4 tastes: sour, sweet, salty, and bitter • Thai food is traditionally eaten using only the right hand. Thai Seafood Curry

  11. Music • Thai music is very traditional • It has been influenced by China and India. • Modern pop music is popular among young people. • All the different ethnic groups have their own special music.

  12. History • The national emblem features Garuda a god from Hindu and Buddhist mythology • Thailand never colonized by Europeans. • People have lived there as far back as 500,000 years ago. • The current kingdom is the Rattanakosin Kingdom and was founded in 1782.
