Heart Disease & Stroke • According to the 2009 Wyoming Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS)– 27.0% of Wyoming adults had 3 or more CVD Risk Factors (smoking, hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity, lack of physical activity, and diabetes) • 84.2% of Wyoming Adults had at least one risk factor • These are down from 28.4% and 86.1% in 2007
Diabetes • As of 2010, 18.8 Million people in the U.S. had been diagnosed as having diabetes • Another 7.0 Million were undiagnosed • 1.9 Million new cases were diagnosed in people over 20 years old in 2007 CDC – National Diabetes Fact Sheet, 2011
Diabetes • 1 in every 400-600 children has Type I diabetes • Type II is not just limited to adults anymore • Estimated that 45% of all new cases of Type II are being diagnosed in large Pediatric Centers (CSG-Trends Alert 2006)
Diabetes • End Stage Renal Disease (ERSD) Network #15 2009 Annual Report • 89 new cases of end-stage renal disease in 2009 • 37 (41.6%) of these cases directly linked to diabetes • As of 2009 there were a total of 239 Wyoming citizens on dialysis because of end stage renal disease • 102 (42.7%) due directly to diabetes
