Faculty Requirements:Applied Health Sciences • Grade: 60 (marked pass/fail) • Time Requirement: students must write the ELPE by the end of their 1A term; students who have not completed the ELPE requirement by the end of second year will have their future registrations cancelled and will be allowed to proceed only after successful completion of this requirement. • Equivalent to ELPE: one of ESL 102R, ENGL 109, 129R, 140R, 209, 210, 240R with a grade of 60%; passing the Writing Clinic program.

Faculty Requirements:Arts & Computing and Financial Managements • Grade: 65; (marked pass/fail); 60 for students who began studies before September, 2004(marked pass/fail) • Time Requirement: students enrolled after September 2004 must write the ELPE by end of 1B (or completion of five courses) and must pass the ELPE by the end of 2B; future registration will be cancelled without successful completion of the ELPE requirement. • Equivalent to ELPE: Arts 101 with a grade of 65%; passing the Writing Clinic program; by permission only: ESL 102R, ENGL 129R or 140R.

Faculty Requirements:Engineering & Software Engineering • Grade: 60 (marked numerically) • Time Requirement: end of 2A with no further registration without passing ELPE or the ELPE Program in the Writing Centre. • Equivalent to ELPE: one of ENGL 109, 129R, 210E or 210F with a grade of 60%; passing the Writing Clinic program. Engineering (Architecture) • Grade: 65 (marked numerically) • Time Requirement: end of 2A with no further registration without passing ELPE or the ELPE Program in the Writing Centre. • Equivalent to ELPE: passing the Writing Clinic program; a Writing Centre tutor will offer the Writing Clinic program in Cambridge.

Faculty Requirements: Faculty of Environment • Grade: 65 (marked pass/fail) • Time Requirement: required to write ELPE in first term; students who have not completed the ELPE requirement by the end of second year will have their future registrations cancelled and will be allowed to proceed only after successful completion of this requirement. • Equivalent to ELPE: Arts 101 (by permission); passing the Writing Clinic program.

Faculty Requirements:Math • Grade: 60 (marked pass/fail) • Time Requirement: students who have not completed the Writing Skills Requirement before enrolling in their 2B term will have their future registrations cancelled and will be allowed to proceed only after successful completion of this requirement. • Equivalent to ELPE: ENGL 109, 129R, 210C, 210E, 210F, ESL 102R (note: ENGL 119 is not equivalent to ELPE); passing the Writing Clinic program.

  13. Statistics: Pass rate on first attempt • Campus wide, 70% of students pass the ELPE on their first attempt.

  15. Marking Scheme • Diagnostic not punitive • Structure, content, and grammar • “P” for pass, “F” for fail • Only Engineering and Software Engineering students receive a numerical grade

  17. Time Management • Plan (5 – 10 minutes) - take action against writer’s block • Write (30 – 40 minutes) - write on every other line • Proofread (5 – 10 minutes) - proofread for your own errors

Ten Common Errors… • Before the ELPE many students were nervous, they soon felt better when they discovered how enjoyable it was. • Three things you will need are: an internet connection, Windows XP, and free softwares you can pick up at the office. • When we inquired about the English Language Proficiency Exam, we learned you could still register for the April sitting.

Ten Common Errors… • Some students hire proof-reading services which some instructors disapprove of the Writing Clinic on the other hand is a great place to go to learn how to fix your own errors and the tutors are very approachable. • My Father told me that coca cola would take the rust off penny's. My sister and myself tried it and it don't work. • Each of the team members have to do an equal share of the research.

Ten Common Errors • Although their not perfect, my parents really try to be good people everyday. • After listening to her, she had me convinced I was unprepared. • You'll be really excited about writing essays. After you've consulted with one of our tutors. • If you're going to spend that much money on a bicycle, you'd better be prepared to keep all of it's parts in good working order.

  22. Writing Skills Workshops The ELPP, in conjunction with Counselling Services, offers a number of Writing Skills Workshops.  These workshops are offered at NO CHARGE to registered UW students.

  23. Recap • Every undergraduate student needs to pass the ELPE in order to graduate. • Please check your faculty requirements. • Campus-wide, 70% of all students pass on their first attempt. • There are a number of options for students who are unsuccessful.
