  2. What is Online Dating? • Became popular in early 2000s. • Over 800 online dating websites exist today. • People create online profiles detailing personal details from age to income in the hopes of meeting a partner. • Members are matched up due to wants, similarities, and, likes.

  3. Who Uses It? • Once thought to be a service for the younger generation. • Age range has dramatically increased to include men and women between the ages of 18-55. • Recently, the highest number of users are between the ages of 35 and 55.

  4. Why Use It? • There are so many reason people give for using online dating sites. • People claim their extremely busy careers prevent them from going out and meeting other singles • People claim to be shy and therefore do not enjoy the crowd in bars and clubs. • Single parents claim they may not have the time to go out to meet people.

  5. Disadvantages of Online Dating Very costly! • In 2008, Americans spent over $2.4 billion dollars on online dating. That number is ever growing. • Some people are not what they put out on their profiles. • Talking to a person through email or chat is different from speaking to the person physically. • Online daters often bypass potential mates all in the name of waiting for the perfect person.

  6. Con-artist! Dangers of Online Dating. False Image: No matter what the person says in their profile, you can never be sure who the person truly is. People whose profiles may seem like the perfect match may turn out to be dangerous people.

  7. Dangers of Online Dating Avenue for Scams: Some members of online dating sites join the sites just to extort money from other members.This causes emotional trauma on the victim but is also financially draining.

  9. Online Dating and Teenagers • Online dating is particularly dangerous for teenagers. • An Australian online dating website, Oasis Active has a lot of teenage members as young as 15 years old. • Most of these people do not understand the dangers of such online dating sites.

  10. Conclusion • Online dating sites are dangerous. • People are usually not what they seem to be on these sites. • People should try as much as they can to avoid online dating websites.
