  2. The Road to Gettysburg • McClellan, Burnside and Hooker--- generals whose work ended in disaster for the Union • hoped North would call for peace • South wanted European aid

  3. The Battle of Gettysburg • 1863- General Lee crosses to Pennsylvania • Battle of Gettysburg-an 1863 battle in which the Union defeated the Confederacy, ending hopes for a Confederate victory in the North; 3 days • Men Lost: - North: 23,000 -South: 28,000 • Pickett’s Charge- the attack when Lee ordered General Pickett to mount a direct attack in the middle of a Union line; deadly mistake http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvA0J_2ZpIQ&feature=player_detailpage

  4. Siege of Vicksburg • Last major Confederate area in South • Grant attacked it, then surrounded city and blocked off supplies so Confederates had to surrender • Now South was split in two • Union was leading the War (Look at map on page 517)

  5. Sherman’s Total War • 1864- Grant was made commander of all the Union armies • General Sherman fought through the South to Atlanta and then to the coast • Sherman conquers Savannah

  6. Grant’s Virginia Campaign • Grant’s army fought savage battles while moving toward Richmond • Battle of Wilderness- May 1864 • Cold Harbor attack • Petersburg- June 1864

  7. Surrender at Appomattox • General Lee (Confederacy) and General Grant (Union) met in the Appomattox Court House- Virginia • Arranged Lee’s surrender there • Grant gave generous surrender terms THE NORTH WINS!!!
