Naming Compounds=“Counting Stars” By: Kristina W. and Molly G.
Lately I been, I been losing sleepDreaming about getting all “A”s and “B”sBut baby, I been, I been prayin' hardSo I’m not gonna fail this testCause we'll be studying hardYeah, we'll be naming compounds
I see this compound • (FeSO4)Is it ionic or is it covalentin my face is flashing signs • it has nonmetal and a metal
must be ionicGotta use roman numeralsAnd add –ide at the endI'm just doing what we're told
I know SO4 has a charge of 2And I know then that Iron also has a charge of 2I know, SO4, has to stay sulfateFeSO4 is iron (II) Sulfate
If the ionic compound was polyatomic • We would leave it alone • And if it was normal • We would add –ide to the nonmetal
Lately I been, I been losing sleepDreaming about getting all “A”’s and “B”’sBut baby, I been, I been prayin' hardSo I’m not gonna fail this testCause we'll be, we’ll be studying hard
but if it was a hydratewe would take the compound then adda prefix in front of hydratefor examplethisLiClO4 ·3H2O
is: lithium perchloratetrihydrateAnd if the compound was covalentwe would need to know if it had an “H” in front
And If it was normal we would just use prefixes • And add –ide at the end I couldn't lie, couldn't lie, couldn’t liemaybe naming compounds isn’t that bad
Lately I been, I been losing sleepDreaming about getting all “A”s and “B”sBut baby, I been, I been prayin' hardSo I’m not gonna fail this testCause we'll be studying hard
If there was an H in front (hey!)It could be binary with hydro- in front and -ic acid at the end • But if it was an oxyacid (hey!)You need to change the end from -ite to -ousor -ate to -ic
Oh, oh, oh.[Bridge 4x:]Take that study guideWatch it burnSing in the riverThe lessons I learned
To find the Ionic formula(hey!)Identify the charges and criss crossbut to find the formula for covalent compounds (hey!)if there is a prefix no criss crossbut if there is an acid criss crossLately I been, I been losing sleepDreaming about getting “A”s and “B”sBut baby, I been, I been prayin' hardSaid we’re not gonna fail this testWe'll be, we'll be studying hard
