Status Report for Compendium on Research in Water and Sanitation
Current Situation • Information as abstracts for 92 Studies /projects • Require editing for language • A few standardization issues – Clarity on Initiator, Research Agency, Time Period, Contacts; Key outputs/findings • Thematic categorization done; need refining • Verify titles and project names for easy referencing • Good to get agreement from authors on sharing procedures • Introduction still a draft version • WESNET pitch to be clear – sector analysis, sector issues, research in process, gaps? • Compendium a continuous process with annual updates • Need to link with studies as “threads” in text of intro • Add known studies from Solxchange and any informally known sources
Compendium Abstracts • Each of these themes can have sub-themes (detailed in next 2 slides) • Refine these and Freeze. Then add/cull studies • Non-Indian Studies - Exclude?? • Any Acceptable standard for inclusion? • Are proposed studies to be included? End of section?
Thematic Issues - 1 • Water Resource Management and Use (25) • Scarcity/Availability – Variation across Regions • Studies/Pilots of collaborative/conjunctive use models (3/25) • Decentralised or user-managed systems (6/25) • Sectoral competition and changing nature of sector use – Increasing Urban demand, shift in crop pattern (4/25) • Conflicts at multiple levels – between states, urban vs. rural, industry vs. villagers, distributive arrangements • Appropriate tech., water harvesting, conservation (8/25) • Drinking water (11) • Coverage and “falling back”, Scale of work remaining, MDG • Changing demography – rural to urban - hence demand and Tech • Water-Quality Affected habitations • User-managed Systems – Sustainability and Support (7/11)
Thematic Issues - 2 • Sanitation & Hygiene (13) • Scale of required coverage, MDG • 2.8 m IHLs added annually (2001-2005), This pace would not achieve full rural coverage by 2012 • NGP/ODF strategy shows promise of going to scale; Concerns emerging; Need to constantly refine/improve (2/13) • Service Delivery Approaches – What is the best mix? Elements contributing to continued behavior change (6/13) • Water Quality, Pollution and Treatment • Increasing Population at risk (arsenic, Fluoride, industrial waste, urban waste, dense population impacts) – improved surveillance, need for preventives as well as cost-effective and manageable solutions • WES and Livelihoods/Rights • Impacts on Health, Time, Basic Rights
Overarching Theme • Governance • Regulation, Decentralisation, Financing, Law (6) • State, Pvt. Sector, NGO sector spaces • User-managed Systems and Technology (7 in DW, 6 in San) • Service Delivery Approach • Sectoral assessments, management systems (6) • Most of these studies provide learning to advise/influence and identify gaps in institutional and legal framework,
