During World War I, trench warfare on the Western Front, stretching from the English Channel to the Swiss Border, led to catastrophic losses. Soldiers faced horrendous conditions, battling in muddy trenches infested with disease and the threat of death. New technologies such as poison gas, tanks, and aircraft emerged, but the effectiveness of these innovations was often limited. American forces, known as "Doughboys," joined in the final year under General John J. Pershing, providing fresh morale and support to allied troops amid the horrors of trench warfare.
