  3. The Responsible Decision-Making Model • STEP 1: • Describe the situation that requires a decision

  4. STEP 2: • List possible decisions you may make

  5. STEP 3 • Share the list of possible decisions with a trusted adult

  6. STEP 4 • Evaluate the consequences of each decision

  7. STEP 5 • Decide which decision is responsible and most appropriate

  8. STEP 6 • Act on your decision and evaluate the results

  9. Collaboration • Children working together in their efforts to know and understand. (Santrock, 6)

  10. Problem Solving • Four Steps of Problem Solving • 1. Find and Frame the Problem- Recognize Problem Exists • 2. Develop Good Problem-Solving Strategies-Find the problem and clearly define it and develop strategies to solve it. -Subgoaling-involves setting intermediate goals that put you in a better position to reach your final goal -Algorithms- strategies that guarantee a solution to a problem - Heuristics- rules of thumb that can suggest a soltion to a problem • 3. Evaluate Solutions There may be obstacles that you face such as anxiety when solving a problem. • 4. Rethink and Redefine Problems and Solutions Over Time

  11. With these four steps along with the steps of decision making, one should be able to make educated decisions dealing with drugs, alcohol, and peer pressure. When a student is approached and asked to do an illegal substance they know is wrong, they have to be able to run through such steps and make the right decision to say no. Problem solving skills and decision making skills are used not only in a classroom, but in one’s everyday life.

  12. Straw Activity • Jog in place for a minute • Hold your nose and breathe in through the straw • How hard is it to breathe??? • This is what it feels like every time a smoker breathes in.

  13. Model For Using Resistance Skills 1. Say no in an assertive way. 2. Give reasons for saying no. 3. Use nonverbal behavior to match verbal behavior. 4. Avoid being in situations in which there will be pressure tomake harmful decisions
