  2. What is a Family History Center? Family History Centers are branches of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Centers are staffed by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and volunteers from the general public. Everyone is welcome to visit the centers and use the resources.

  3. Why Should I Visit a FHC? Services Research help from volunteer staff. Staff members will not do the research for you. However, they can give you an orientation about the center, answer research questions (research expertise in each center varies), help you use center resources and order microfilm and microfiche from the Family History Library. Training classes. Many centers offer classes for patrons on a variety of genealogical research topics. Referrals to other libraries and archives. Family History Center staff may be aware of other institutions in the area that can help you.

  4. Why Should I Visit a FHC? Resources Microfilm and microfiche. Most centers provide their patrons access to the Church’s circulating collection of microfilmed genealogical records for a small fee ($5.50 for short term, $16.50 indefinite). Computer Resources. Secure internet connectivity is available in most centers. Patrons may use this connection to access FamilySearch and other genealogical web sites. Published Resources. Most centers have a collection of published reference sources that may include research helps, genealogies, histories, gazetteers, atlases and maps.

  5. Microfilm and Microfiche Family History Centers have access to over 2.4 million rolls of microfilm and 727,000 microfiche held by the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Most of these items can be rented on a short term loan or indefinite loan.

Microfilm/Microfiche Rental Rental Rate: Microfilm: 1st 30 days - $5.50 30 day renewal - $5.50 Indefinite loan - $5.50 (not available at Downtown Library) Microfiche: Indefinite loan - $0.15 per fiche Books are not loaned out to the Family History Centers – however, there is currently a project to digitize the book collections and place them online. Many centers have a substantial permanent collection of microfilm and microfiche so be sure to check before you place orders.

  15. Internet Access Family History Centers have internet access and have subscriptions to a variety of online databases: HeritageQuest Footnote World Vital Records FindMyPast Godfrey Memorial Library and others.

  21. How Can You Help? Visiting the FHC Equipment and funding are based on attendance. Volunteering at the FHC The more volunteers we have, the more hours we can be open. Assist in Indexing projects All indexed records will be available to the public at no cost.

  24. What Happens to the Indexed Records? All records indexed by volunteers will be posted on the web at pilot.familysearch.org. Many records will include the digital image which you can download. Others will be the indexed record.
