  2. Production Roles in the Film Industry • Director: A film director has many responsibilities and is the crucial link between the production, technical and creative teams. They are the driving force of the film and it is down it them to translate a written script into images and sound for cinema. Responsibilities they have include making decisions about cast, script editing, shot composition and shot selection and editing. Directors need to have a great creative vision and are ultimately responsible for the success or failure of a film. • Example: James Watkins is a British film director. Some of hos work includes Woman in Black (2012) and Eden Lake (2008).

  3. Production Roles in the Film Industry • Producer: A film producer is the person who has overall final responsibility for the success of the film. They need to deal with be responsible for many different things and therefore need to be highly self-motivated. These things can include bringing together creative teams, over seeing finance, the pre-production of the film, ensure a smooth running in the production of the film and liaising with the director about editing of the film, visual effects and music and marketing. • Example: Chris Columbus is a film director and producer – some of the films he has produced include The Help (2011) and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004).

Production Roles in the Film Industry • Screenwriter: A film screenwriter is the person in the film responsible for research of the story, the development of the narrative and writing the screenplay and delivering it to development executives. They need to be able to provide a blue print for everyone involved in the film. Screenwriters must be able to understand a story and have a creative imagination to be able to project their vision onto paper. • Example: Jane Goldman is a screenwriter from the UK, some of the films she has done the screen play for includes Stardust (2007), Kickass (2010) and Woman in Black (2012).

Production Roles in the Film Industry • Hair and Makeup: The hair and makeup department in film play a key role in the overall design of the film and are responsible for the design of the hair and makeup for cast. It is also vital that they are responsible for the continuity and maintenance of this on set. • Music Supervisor: Music supervisors responsible for organizing teams which could include orchestras, engineering, music contractors etc. They over see the compositional process ensure that the required music is written, listened to and reported upon. They also organize music orchestration and copying. • Cinematography: Cinematographers are responsible for all the camera work in a film. Some of the things their work includes is shot composition, camera movement and the way a director of photography choose to manipulate light and shade etc.
