  3. A. The Battles Begin 1. The Alamo lay at the foot of the Old San Antonio Road, or El Camino Real, a very traveled and used road.

  4. A. The Battles Begin 2. Men at the Alamo decided to fortify it to ensure protection and it became the most fortified place in Western North America.

  5. A. The Battles Begin 3. People were needed to protect the Alamo, since there were only 30 men at the time.

  6. A. The Battles Begin 4. James Bowie and William B. Travis came to the call even though they were not regular soldiers.

  7. A. The Battles Begin ~They can only get 29 others to join them William B Travis

  8. A. The Battles Begin 5. After only 13 days, Santa Anna arrived and started a two week siege on the Alamo. ~They were surrounded so that no one can leave

  9. A. The Battles Begin 6. William B. Travis, in desperation, wrote letters calling for help and aid at the Alamo. These letters were later seen as a heroic attempt to get support for the Alamo.

  10. B. The Fall of the Alamo 1. Soon after, 1800 Mexican troops bombarded the Alamo waving red flags to show they had no mercy.

  11. B. The Fall of the Alamo 2. After only 90 minutes of fighting the battle grounds were quiet and there were casualties on both sides. ~All of the 189 defenders of the Alamo were killed

  12. B. The Fall of the Alamo 3. Although the Alamo was a large loss for the Texans, it strengthened their want to be free from Mexico.

  13. C. Goliad 1. James Fannin was leading his troops in hopes of reorganizing them and had them stop outside of Goliad Texas.

  14. C. Goliad 2. They met up with the Mexican troops and couldn’t hold them back, eventually having to surrender.

  15. C. Goliad 3. All surviving troops were captured and marched to Goliad, where Fannin hoped that they would be spared because of his surrender.

  16. C. Goliad 4. Santa Anna decided to execute all of them since he saw their actions as tyrannical.

  17. C. Goliad 5. Due to the Mexican brutality after Goliad, many Anglo Americans began to flee for their lives, thinking that Santa Anna would kill any Anglo.

  18. D. San Jacinto 1. Sam Houston’s army was restless to fight due to the brutal Mexican attacks and a skirmish broke out between the Mexican Army and the Texas Cavalry

  19. D. San Jacinto 2. Houston surrounded the large Mexican army so they couldn’t surrender and the Texans began shouting “Remember the Alamo, Remember Goliad”.

  20. D. San Jacinto 3. The battle lasted only 18 minutes before Santa Anna fled and got away, making the Mexicans surrender.

  21. D. San Jacinto 4. The Texans lost only 2, while the Mexicans lost 630 men.

  22. E. Convention of 1836 1 Delegates met at Washington-on-the-Brazos for the Convention of 1836 and decided to declare independence. ~2 weeks later they had written a constitution for Texas

  23. E. Convention of 1836 2. George Childress headed a committee to draft the Declaration of Independence, which had three sections.

  24. Convention of 1836 ~First: Proclaimed their right to a revolution ~Second: Their list of Grievances ~Third: Proclaimsindependence and support for those who sign the document.

  25. F. Independence for Texas 1. A constitution was written and modeled after the US constitution.

  26. F. Independence for Texas 2. A Republic was created for Texas. ~People have the right to participate in government by electedrepresentatives

  27. F. Independence for Texas 3. After the Battle of San Jacinto, Santa Anna was captured and brought to Sam Houston.

  28. F. Independence for Texas 4. Two treaties were made and signed by Santa Anna; one was secret and one was public.

  29. F. Independence for Texas ~Public Treaty: Santa Anna would never fight Texas again and all troops would return to Mexico without any more fighting. Also, prisoners of war would be exchanged.

  30. F. Independence for Texas ~Secret: Santa Anna would persuade Mexico to recognize Texas’ independence while trying to make the border of Texas fall at the Rio Grande.

  31. F. Independence for Texas 5. Since Santa Anna agreed to these treaties, Sam Houston and others did not have him executed, although many Texans wanted him dead

  32. F. Independence for Texas 6. Sam Houston pardoned Santa Anna since he was the new Texas President.

  33. Reflections: • Why do you think the Texans allowed for a secret treaty with Mexico? • Would you have let Santa Anna live after the War for Independence? • Was Santa Anna justified in killing all of the surviving soldiers after the battle of Goliad?
