  1. Deuteronomy A Woman’s Place is in the….?

  2. “In this book are the words that Moses spoke to the people of Israel when they were in the wilderness east of the Jordan River.” (Deuteronomy 1:1 – GN)

  3. “I just want to do what the Bible says.” • “The Bible says it, I believe it, and that settles it.” • “Don’t spend a lot of time with fancy explanations and theories. Just obey the word of God.”

  4. “Every year be sure to save a tenth of the crops harvested from whatever you plant in your fields…. • But suppose you can’t carry that ten percent of your harvest to the place where the LORD chooses to be worshiped. If you live too far away, or if the LORD gives you a big harvest, then sell this part and take the money there instead. When you and your family arrive, spend the money on food for a big celebration. Buy cattle, sheep, goats, wine, beer, and if there are any other kinds of food that you want, buy those too. (Deuteronomy 14:24-26 – CEV)

  5. …wine, or other alcoholic drink (NLT) • …wine, or beer--anything that looks good to you (The Message) • …wine, liquor-whatever you choose (GOD’S Word)

  6. Cities of refuge • “When the LORD your God destroys the nations whose land He is giving you, you will take over their land and settle in their towns and homes. Then you must set apart three cities of refuge in the land the LORD your God is giving you. Survey the territory, and divide the land the LORD your God is giving you into three districts, with one of these cities in each district…If someone kills another person unintentionally, without previous hostility, the slayer may flee to any of these cities to live in safety. (Deuteronomy 19:1-4 NLT)

  7. “For example, suppose someone goes into the forest with a neighbor to cut wood. And suppose one of them swings an ax to chop down a tree, and the ax head flies off the handle, killing the other person. In such cases, the slayer may flee to one of the cities of refuge to live in safety. If the distance to the nearest city of refuge is too far, an enraged avenger might be able to chase down and kill the person who caused the death. Then the slayer would die unfairly, since he had never shown hostility toward the person who died. That is why I am commanding you to set aside three cities of refuge.” (Deuteronomy 19:5-7 NLT)

  8. “I forbid the practice of private vengeance. If a man accidently kills another man while chopping wood, his blood may not be avenged by his family.”

  9. Slavery • [Slavery] “was established by decree of Almighty God...it is sanctioned in the Bible, in both Testaments, from Genesis to Revelation...it has existed in all ages, has been found among the people of the highest civilization, and in nations of the highest proficiency in the arts.” • – Jefferson Davis

  10. "If you buy a Hebrew slave, he may serve for no more than six years. Set him free in the seventh year, and he will owe you nothing for his freedom.” (Exodus 21:2 NLT) • “When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are.” (Exodus 21:7 NLT)

  11. “Slaves, obey your human masters with fear and trembling; and do it with a sincere heart, as though you were serving Christ.” (Ephesians 6:5 GNB)

  12. “Masters, be fair and just in the way you treat your slaves. Remember that you too have a Master in heaven.” (Colossians 4:1 GNB) • “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28)

  13. “It was not the apostle’s work to overturn arbitrarily or suddenly the established order of society. To attempt this would be to prevent the success of the gospel. But he taught principles which struck at the very foundation of slavery and which, if carried into effect, would surely undermine the whole system.”(AA pg. 459)

  14. Polygamy • “Before we begin, it is necessary to examine all assumptions in the polygamy issue as it relates to the Bible: Do you accept the Bible as God’s Word…from cover to cover? If your answer is "no", then there is no point in your continuing with this essay because we will be working on different assumptions…The reason I [would] categorize you as "secular" is because the arguments advanced by secularists are practically the same as those advanced by those who do not wholly accept the Bible's teachings. Somewhere along the line Yahweh's infallible Word is judged by those "Christians" who find it difficult to accept what Yahweh says in the same way as secularists do. Those who only accept the Bible in part only accept Yahweh in part.”

  15. “In my experience, though, the vast majority of Christians who say they accept God's Word from cover to cover rarely do. When God’s Word contradicts what they believe, instead of confessing their error and readjusting their lives accordingly…they wriggle and squirm and try to twist Scripture to conform to them.”

  16. “If a man takes a second wife, he must continue to give his first wife the same amount of food and clothing and the same rights that she had before.” (Exodus 21:10 GNB)

  17. War • “God is pro war”

  18. “Suppose a man marries a young woman and later he decides he doesn't want her. So he makes up false charges against her, accusing her of not being a virgin when they got married. If this happens, the young woman's parents are to take the blood-stained wedding sheet that proves she was a virgin, and they are to show it in court to the town leaders. Her father will say to them, ‘I gave my daughter to this man in marriage, and now he doesn’t want her. He has made false charges against her, saying that she was not a virgin when he married her. But here is the proof that my daughter was a virgin; look at the bloodstains on the wedding sheet!’” (Deuteronomy 22:13-17 GNB)

  19. “Then the town leaders are to take the husband and beat him. They are also to fine him a hundred pieces of silver and give the money to the young woman's father, because the man has brought disgrace on an Israelite woman. Moreover, she will continue to be his wife, and he can never divorce her as long as he lives. But if the charge is true and there is no proof that she was a virgin, then they are to take her out to the entrance of her father's house, where the men of her city are to stone her to death. She has done a shameful thing among our people by having intercourse before she was married, while she was still living in her father's house. In this way you will get rid of this evil.” (Deuteronomy 22:18-21 GNB)

  20. “If two men are having a fight and the wife of one tries to help her husband by grabbing hold of the other man’s genitals, show her no mercy; cut off her hand.” (Deuteronomy 25:11-12 GNB) • ? “Shave her groin”

  21. “When the LORD your God gives you victory in battle and you take prisoners, you may see among them a beautiful woman that you like and want to marry. Take her to your home, where she will shave her head, cut her fingernails, and change her clothes. She is to stay in your home and mourn for her parents for a month; after that, you may marry her. Later, if you no longer want her, you are to let her go free. Since you forced her to have intercourse with you, you cannot treat her as a slave and sell her.” (Deuteronomy 21:10-14 GNB)

  22. “Suppose a man is caught raping a young woman who is not engaged. He is to pay her father the bride price of fifty pieces of silver, and she is to become his wife, because he forced her to have intercourse with him. He can never divorce her as long as he lives. No man is to disgrace his father by having intercourse with any of his father's wives.” (Deuteronomy 22:28-30 GNB)

  23. Divorce • “It was also said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce.’ But now I tell you: if a man divorces his wife for any cause other than her unfaithfulness, then he is guilty...’” (Matthew 5:31-32)

  24. “Some Pharisees came and tried to trap Him with this question: ‘Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife for just any reason?’ ‘Haven’t you read the Scriptures?’ Jesus replied. ‘They record that from the beginning 'God made them male and female.' And He said, 'This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.' Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.’ ‘Then why did Moses say in the law that a man could give his wife a written notice of divorce and send her away?’ they asked.

  25. ‘Moses permitted divorce only as a concession to your hard hearts, but it was not what God had originally intended.’” (Matthew 19:3-8 NLT)

  26. “Those who come to the conclusion that there is not a distinction made in the Bible all the way from Adam to Revelation in the roles of men and women in the church have to go through the most phenomenal mind bending gymnastic to escape the plain truth, that it’s incomprehensible to me.”

  27. “Women submit yourselves to your own husbands…” (Ephesians 5:22) • “Some will say, well he (Paul) was off his medication those days. [Or] that [this] just doesn’t really matter. Paul was being influenced by the traditions of the culture? So we’re not supposed to take these verses seriously. What’s gonna happen to your Bible? How are you gonna chop up your scriptures if you start picking and choosing what passages and commands you think the writers were under some imbalanced influence of the cultures of the day?” - Batchelor

  28. “The ultimate authority biblically, for God’s people, from Adam to the present day, has been that men are to be the priest leaders in the family and in the church. They are to be ordained. What that means is, God has designed in his order of things, doesn’t matter how popular it is, or what the world says, it’s what the word says – that men should have the authority to be the spiritual guides, the leaders in family…So when God says things in his word should be a certain way, are we going to tell him he’s wrong? We may not understand it, but the first thing before we understand is to submit to what he says.” - Batchelor

  29. “The head of woman is man” (1 Corinthians 11:3) • “A woman dishonors her head if she prays or prophesies without a covering on her head, for this is the same as shaving her head. Yes, if she refuses to wear a head covering, she should cut off all her hair…a woman should wear a covering on her head to show she is under authority.” (1 Corinthians 11:5,6,10).

  30. “But if anyone wants to argue about this, I simply say that we have no other custom than this, and neither to God’s other churches.” (1 Corinthians 11:16)

  31. “The women should keep quiet in the meetings. They are not allowed to speak; as the Jewish Law says, they must not be in charge. If they want to find out something, they should ask their husbands at home. It is a disgraceful thing for a woman to speak in a church meeting.” (1 Corinthians 14:33-35)

  32. “Oracle of Delphi was a priestess” • “in that context, Paul is saying, tell them [the women] to be quiet. They’re not supposed to be teaching – meaning in the capacity of a pastor.”

  33. Temple of Apollo

  34. Baptisms for the dead • Getting drunk at the Lord’s supper • Chaotic and unintelligible forms of worship • “Keep away from the worship of idols” (1 Corinthians 10:14) • A man in the church who was sleeping with his stepmother • “I declare to your shame that some of you do not know God” (1 Corinthians 15:34)

  35. Temple of Apollo, Oracle of Delphi • “Rather should the words of the Torah be burned than entrusted to a woman…Whoever teaches his daughter the Torah is like one who teaches her obscenity.” (1st century Rabbi Eliezer)*

  36. “It is good for a man not to marry.” (1 Corinthians 7:1)

  37. “Wives, submit to your husband’s as to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:22)* • “Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear…just as you would obey Christ.” (Ephesians 6:5)

  38. Jesus • Jewish ritual laws stated that a man should not speak to a woman (other than a wife or child) during her period • “A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding.” (Mark 5:25 NLT)

  39. Jewish ritual law forbid conversing with foreign woman • The Samaritan and Canaanite women

  40. “Rather should the words of the Torah be burned than entrusted to a woman…Whoever teaches his daughter the Torah is like one who teaches her obscenity.” (1st century Rabbi Eliezer) • “She had a sister named Mary, who sat down at the feet of the Lord and listened to his teaching… “Mary has chosen the right thing…” (Luke 10:39-42 GNB)

  41. “This dear woman, a daughter of Abraham, has been held in bondage by Satan for eighteen years. Isn’t it right that she be released, even on the Sabbath?” (Luke 13:16 NLT)

  42. “The Roman officer and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened. They said, ‘This man truly was the Son of God!’ And many women who had come from Galilee with Jesus to care for Him were watching from a distance.” (Matthew 27:54-55 NLT)

  43. “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28) • "[Women] are to be qualified to take any post that may be offered" • "The Influence of Women," The Health Reformer, June 1880, 175)
