NCATS Mission: The mission of the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences is to catalyze the generation of innovative methods and technologies that will enhance the development, testing, and implementation of diagnostics and therapeutics across a wide range of human diseases and conditions

Components of NCATS • Clinical and Translational Science Awards • Office of Rare Diseases Research (OD/ORD) • Cures Acceleration Network ($10 M in new funding) • Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Diseases (TRND) • Rapid Access to Interventional Development (RAID) • Molecular Libraries Program (intramural only) • FDA-NIH Regulatory Science

NCATS Leadership • Dr. Thomas Insel is acting Director of NCATS • Also chairs the search committee for a permanent NCATS Director • Not an applicant • Continues as NIMH Director until permanent Director selected • Two Scientific Divisions: • Dr. Josie Briggs is acting Director of the Division of Clinical Innovation • Replaces Dr. Anthony Hayward, now Senior Advisor to the Director of NCATS • DCI is the new home to the CTSA program • Dr. Briggs will continue as NCCAM Director • Duration of appointment until permanent NCATS Director can appoint a new DCI Director • Dr. Chris Austin is Director of the Division of Preclinical Innovation • Former Director of National Center for Translational Technology (NHGRI-intramural) • TRND, RAID programs

NCATS Leadership • Four Offices: • Dr. Steven Groft is Director of the Office of Rare Disease Research • Dr. Jane Steinberg is acting Director of the Office of Grants Management • Will continue as OGM Director for NIMH • Duration of appointment until permanent NCATS Director selected • Erin Shannon is acting Director of the Executive Office of NCATS • Dr. Kathy Hudson is acting Director of the Office of Policy, Communication, and Strategic Alliances • Will continue as Deputy Director for Science Outreach and Policy in NIH OD • Duration of appointment until permanent NCATS Director selected • Policy Guidance and Leadership • NCATS Integration Committee • Thomas Insel, Josie Briggs, Eric Greene, Susan Shuren, Hugh Auchincloss, Walter Koroshetz, James Anderson

NCATS Priorities • Appoint permanent director • Timeline • Advisory Council • NARRC dissolved, interim will be NIDDK, date is February 15 • Release new RFA • To include new and competitive renewal CTSAs • Timeline is release by June 2012 • Submission date likely December 2012 • No plans to cut current elements/components of CTSAs • Allow each CTSA to focus on strengths
