  1. 1890-1900 Jazmine Hernandez 10/11/12 Period 8

  2. 1890 The Oklahoma Territory was established by congress. Provided the usual framework of a territorial government. Under the law's requirements, the president would select a governor, a secretary, three federal judges and marshals. The land was unoccupied in the Indian Territory Then the Native Americans were forced to move to the east Wyoming then becomes 44th state in the U.S in July 20 1890

  3. 1891 Congress passes the Forest Reserve Act, which allows putting aside public forests in any state or territory to preserve timber supply. This is the first step toward protecting the public. There were no specific management provisions for the protection of the forest The timber at the headwaters of streams had to be protected to prevent devastating floods and to insure water supply for the irrigation of lands in the arid West. This water was really important for summer uses

  4. 1892 The Chinese Exclusion Act was about deporting the Chinese Small numbers of Chinese in California mining camps and cities, faced institutionalized discrimination which enacted through a series of Foreign Miner's Tax Laws. (Removed the inflated fee of twenty dollars per month on any foreigner). Americans thought that the Chinese were stealing "American" jobs.   This was mainly the case with the railroad, an industry that worked its way from the foundries of the East into the frontier West.

  5. 1892 continued The working conditions laying railroad track were cruel, long, hot hours in the sun or out the freezing cold and the pay was horrible.  Many Chinese immigrants died working on the railroads, from malnutrition, dehydration, or the explosions caused by blast equipment. The Americans were angry because they found a place to settle called Chinatown and started taking more and more jobs even though the conditions weren't so great. This is what started the Exclusion Act, which forced many Chinese families from their homes. This involved a ten-year period of eliminating Chinese immigrants to 105 per year

  6. 1893 People have estimated that fewer then 2,000 buffalo roamed on the land then the 20 million that once roamed the western plains The white settle more the 100,000 hurried into Oklahoma’s Cherokee Outlet to claim the 6 million acres of former Cherokee. All these settlers gathering affected both the buffalo and the Cherokee people because the settler’s would hunt more than needed, also they were driving the Cherokee people from their land.

  7. 1893 continued Frederick Jackson Turner declares the closing of the Western frontier. Census Bureau announced the disappearance of a nearby frontier line. Turner took this "closing of the frontier" as an chance to reflect upon the authority it had used. He argued that the frontier had meant that every American generation returned "to primitive conditions on a continually advancing frontier line

  8. 1894 The Carey Act mostly gave land away to corporations in the Southwest these companies had to irrigate the land within 3 years. The goal was to irrigate the west and promote farming in the Southwest. This effort to promote irrigation of dry Western lands was unsuccessful. They cannot raise money to add on a large-scale irrigation projects. Successful land recovery in the West will require a great federal investment.

  9. 1896 In the “Cross of Gold” Speech, Bryan spoke the feelings of Americans from the South and West who felt that the currency system and its effects had injured their financial and cultural interests. These people saw a better system and some degree of inflation as a cure for the economic problems that hurt farmers, miners, and industrial workers.. Sadly his appeal to rural voters in the West and South does not take him to the White House.

  10. 1896 continued The discovery of gold at Bonanza Creek, a branch of the Klondike River near Dawson City, Alaska, made the westerners rich. During the winter of 1896-97, miners worked the Klondike mines, making millions of dollars in gold. California had a half million dollars worth of gold on board. Unfortunately, more than 60 men and women were killed by a snow slides while mining

  11. 1898 Robert Parker and Harry Longbaugh, know as "The Sundance Kid," start robbing banks and trains across the West. Which caused lots of confrontation with the men working there stopping work and transportation.
