Romania in Europe • Position : at the intersection of Central and Southeastern Europe, bordering on the Black Sea • Neighbors : Hungary and Serbia to the west, Ukraine and Moldova to the northeast and east, and Bulgaria to the south • 238,400 square kilometers - is the 9th largest country of the EU by area and has the 7th largest population of the European Union with over 19 million people • Capital : Bucharest - 10th largest city in the EU, with a population of around two million • Official language – Romanian • Ethnic groups (2011) - 88.6% Romanians • 6.5% Hungarians • 3.2% Roma • 1.7% other minorities

Geography Romania's terrain is distributed roughly equally between mountainous, hilly and lowland territories The Danube river flows into the Black Sea within Romania's territory forming the Danube Delta, the 2nd largest and best preserved delta in Europe, and also a biosphere reserve and a biodiversity World Heritage Site

  5. Climate • Romania has a climate that is transitional between temperate and continental, with four distinct seasons • The extreme recorded temperatures were 44.5 °C at Ion Sion in 1951 −38.5 °C at Bod in 1942.

Economy • Currency - Romanian leu (RON) • Romania is divided into 41 counties and the municipality of Bucharest • Romania is a semi-presidential republic where executive functions are held by both government and the president • Foreign relations - It joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation 2004, the EU on 1 January 2007, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in 1972, and is a founding member of the World Trade Organization • In July 2012, the net average monthly wage in the country was $420 - one of the lowest in the EU • Inflation in 2010 was 5% • Unemployment in Romania was at 7% in 2012

Natural resources: crude oil, petroleum products, natural gas, coal, iron , copper, chromium, uranium,gold, limestone, magnesite, marble, clay, coal,arable land and hydropower Transport : Romania total road network is estimated to be 81,713 km long - 17 commercial airports in service - Transfăgărășan - one of the highest and most dramatic roads in Romania- 151km, 1970-1974 Tourism: - focuses on the country's natural landscapes and its rich history - is the 4th fastest growing country in the world in terms of travel and tourism total demand, with a yearly potential growth of 8% from 2007 to 2016 Agriculture employs about 29% of the populaton (one of the highest rates in Europe), and contributes about 8.1% of GDP Industry and construction accounted for 32% of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2003 Service sector constituted 55% of gross domestic product and the sector employed 51.3% of the workforce
