Ro-Ro carriers

Roll-on/roll-off (RORO or ro-ro) ships are cargo ships designed to carry wheeled cargo, such as cars, trucks, semi-trailer trucks, trailers, and railroad cars, that are driven on and off the ship on their own wheels or using a platform vehicle, such as a self-propelled modular transporter.

  3. What do Ro Ro vessels carry? • RoRo stands for ROLL-ON/ROLL-OFF and means that specially designed ships for carrying wheeled cargo, such as cars, trucks, semi-trailer trucks, trailers, and railroad cars can drive on and off of the ship on their own wheels through a vehicle platform.

  4. How many cars can a RoRo carry? 8,000 vehicles. WalleniusWilhelmsen Logistics, for instance, operates four new ro-ro ships, commissioned by its parent companies, that carry about 8,000 vehicles each. By sailing larger ships, the company can more efficiently serve the carmakers, who effectively control the size of the shipping fleet.

  5. Is RoRo Shipping Safe? Safety. Although RoRo shipping is considered more affordable and convenient, it is also more high-risk in terms of vehicle safety. The lack of RoRo availability at certain ports can cause delays in transportation. If this does occur, importers have to find a port that offers this option in their close vicinity.
