  1. Data Manipulation Forest Ecology FOR 212

  2. Importance Value • RD+RF+Rdo • RD=Sort by species, keeping track of those with the species present • RF=use “count” to find amount of stems for species A divide by total of all stems • Rdo= Use “sum” of basal area per species A divided by basal area for all species • Add these three variable to get importance value for each species

  3. Descriptive Data • Cover type, aspect class and slope position can all be described as a percentage. • i.e. Number of plots with cover type 28 (4)/ all plots (11) = .36

  4. Descriptive Data • Using Chart Wizard these percentages can be presented as a pie chart • Steps include: • “Sort by” function (i.e.cover type), • 2. Get “count” by amount of entries per cover type (data -sub-total), • 3. Divide this count by 11 (total number of plots), • 4. Highlight these values and select “Chart Wizard” • 5. Enter title, legend features and percentages

  5. Descriptive Data • Slope percent and basal area/acre are simple averages presented on a tract basis • Steps include: Select cell just under column in question, select the function key, scroll through to AVERAGE, confirm data cells and hit enter.

  6. Use tree data to plot diameters according to 1 inch classes. Format cells so that they are rounded into a 1 inch class Get a count of cells, position count alongside standard classes Develop chart from this count Diameter Distribution

  7. Species Diversity • Use sort and count to get total number of species A, divided by sum total of all species • Use “LN” in function bar to perform Shannon-Weiner calculation • Probably easiest to copy all 11 plots to a separate table an manipulate data that way • Species richness can be determined by getting a count of the different species present
