  2. A. Early Life on the Huang He • The Huang He begins on the Tibetan Plateau • Carries loess – fine yellow silt • This is where it gets its name, Huang = Yellow & He = River • This silt is deposited on the North China Plain when it floods

  3. A. Early Life on the Huang He (con’t) • Crops were grown as early as 5000 B.C. • Also known as China’s Sorrow because the floods can cause Famine and Irrigation canals to fill with silt • Began using levees 3000 years ago – it still floods sometimes

  4. B. Other Regions of China • Chang Jiang = Long River (a.k.a. the Yangtze R.) • World’s 3rd longest River • Also begins on the Tibetan Plateau • Floods in summer • Grows ½ of China’s food today • Flows through several Gorges – we will discuss these tomorrow

  5. B. Other Regions of China (con’t) • Northern Steppes • Not for growing crops • Herded sheep, cattle & horses • People like the Mongols who live in this region periodically raided (even conquered) their neighbors to the south
