  1. A Universe Fine Tuned for the Possibility of Life Presented by Tony Feiger

  2. So What is Fine Tuning?

  3. So What is Fine Tuning?

  4. “Objection !” Some scream. Are we allowed to think that way in science?

  5. Philosophy of Science Historical vs. Experimental Sciences

  6. Philosophy of Science Historical vs. Experimental Sciences Methodological vs. Philosophical Naturalism

  7. Philosophy of Science Historical vs. Experimental Sciences Methodological vs. Philosophical Naturalism Science education has largely adopted the “no God” Philosophical Naturalism

  8. Richard Lewontin, Harvard Research Professor “Our willingness to accept scientific claims that are against common sense is the key to an understanding of the real struggle between science and the supernatural. We take the side of science in spite of the patent absurdity of some of its constructs, in spite of its failure to fulfill many of its extravagant promises of health and life, in spite of the tolerance of the scientific community for unsubstantiated just-so stories, because we have a prior commitment, a commitment to materialism…”

  9. Richard Lewontin, Harvard Research Professor “…It is not that the methods and institutions of science somehow compel us to accept a material explanation of the phenomenal world, but, on the contrary, that we are forced by our a priori adherence to material causes to create an apparatus of investigation and a set of concepts that produce material explanations, no matter how counter-intuitive, no matter how mystifying to the uninitiated. Moreover, that materialism is absolute, for we cannot allow a Divine Foot in the door.”

  10. Philosophy of Science Why should we be limited to the atheist perspective?

  11. Importance of Worldview Naturalism Atheism Material Supernaturalism Theism Spiritual • Effects of Worldview: • How we interpret data • How we live

  12. Philosophy of Science The pitfalls of operating under philosophical naturalism

  13. Philosophy of Science • The pitfalls of operating under philosophical naturalism • You may spend valuable resources on fruitless projects

  14. Philosophy of Science • The pitfalls of operating under philosophical naturalism • You may spend valuable resources on fruitless projects • SETI Program • “Junk” DNA • Random mutation of crop experiments

  15. Philosophy of Science • The pitfalls of operating under philosophical naturalism • You may spend valuable resources on fruitless projects • You may end up destroying your culture

  16. How Philosophy Effects Culture Naturalism, Atheism Universities Immoral Movies, Music, Books & Art Social Problems

  17. What is Truth? The Story of Science Vs. God’s Story

  18. The Story of Science 'In the end, science does not provide the answers most of us require.  Its story of our origins and our end is, to say the least, unsatisfactory.  To the question, "How did it all begin?", science answers, "Probably by an accident."  To the question, "How will it all end?", science answers, "Probably by an accident."  And to many people, the accidental life is not worth living.'  (Postman, Neil. “Science and the Story that We Need” First Things 69 [January 1997]: 29-32)

  19. God’s Story God created the Heavens and the Earth and all that is in them.

  20. God’s Story The Crown of God’s creation was Man, male and female, in His image.

  21. God’s Story Man was made to keep the Earth, to Love one another and to Know Him.

  22. God’s Story Man was made to keep the Earth, to Love one another and to Know Him. Although Man chose to rebel against God, God sent His only begotten Son to die in our place, to bring us peace once again.

  23. God’s Story Man was made to keep the Earth, to Love one another and to Know Him. Although Man chose to rebel against God, God sent His only begotten Son to die in our place, to bring us forgiveness and peace once again. Although some have received this forgiveness and peace with God, the world is still broken because of rebellion against God. One day Christ will come again and make all things new. Paradise will be restored!

  24. One day Christ will come again, bring justice and make all things new. Paradise will be restored! For now, we are Christ’s ambassadors, introducing men and women to God’s story and to God Himself.

  25. Big Bang or Engineered Expansion? • Origin of all matter, energy, space-time, & information! • Unimaginable power • Ingenious laws of nature Cosmological reverberations

  26. Fine Tuned Universe • Fundamental Forces and physical constants • Our Galaxy • Our Solar System • Our Planet

  27. Fine Tuned Universe Fundamental Forces and physical constants • Gravity • Weak nuclear force • Strong nuclear force • Electromagnetic force • Electron mass • Proton mass • Speed of Light • Planck’s Constant • …

  28. Fine Tuned Universe “Natural law…reveals an intelligence of such superiority that, compared with it, all the systematic thinking and acting of human beings is an utterly insignificant reflection.” Albert Einstein, Ideas and Opinions – The World As I See It (New York: Bonanza Books, 1931), p. 40.

  29. Fine Tuned Universe “The more I examine the universe and the details of its architecture, the more evidence I find that the universe in some sense must have known we were coming” Physicist Freeman Dyson, Disturbing the Universe (New York: Harper and Row, 1979), p.250.

  30. Fine Tuned Universe Gravity If the force of gravity were changed by just one part in 1040, stronger or weaker, stars like the sun would not exist in the Universe and nor would life! (According to the calculations of Brandon Carter, physicist, per Show Me God, by Fred Heeren, p. 210)

  31. Fine Tuned Universe Fundamental Forces and physical constants Mass of protons and neutrons A proton is 1836 times heavier than an electron, while a neutron is only .1% heavier than a proton. If neutrons were another .1% heavier, all protons would convert to neutrons, leaving no possibility for atoms in the universe!

  32. Fine Tuned Universe Charge balance of protons and electrons "The charges of the electron and proton have been measured in the laboratory and have been found to be precisely equal and opposite. Were it not for this fact, the resulting charge imbalance would force every object in the universe--our bodies, trees, planets, suns--to explode violently. The cosmos would consist solely of a uniform and tenuous mixture not so very different from air." George Greenstein, THE SYMBIOTIC UNIVERSE.

  33. Fine Tuned Universe - Entropy “If the Big Bang is regarded as only an impressive accident, there is no explanation why it produced a universe with such a high degree of order, contrary to the Second Law…in 1989 (Roger) Penrose computed that to provide a universe compatible with the Second Law the precision needed to set the universe on it’s highly ordered course was to an accuracy of one part in 1010(123).” A Case Against Accident and Self-Organization, by Dean L. Overman (New York: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc, 1997), p. 191

  34. What is Entropy? The measure of disorder of a system

  35. What is Entropy? The measure of disorder of a system Entropy is always increasing
