  2. The first picture taken of Ebola • 1976, under a scanning electron micrograph • Classified as Filoviridae • There are four strains of Ebola: Ebola Sudan, Ebola Zaire, Ebola Reston, Ebola Tai (Ivory Coast)

  3. How Ebola is Contracted:

  4. Signs and symptoms: • Early symptoms: Malaise fatigue, fever, low back ache, N, V, D • Late symptoms: Conjunctivitis, hemorrhagic rash, genital edema, bleeding from E, E, N, T…then DEATH

  5. Hemorrhagic Rash

  6. Species Jump: It can jump from monkey to human by the consumption of “bush meat”

  7. Negative-stranded RNA

  8. Filoviridae on cell surface Elongated and narrow appearance (unlike most viruses which are bumpy and round)

  9. Elongated “U” or “b” shape

  10. Protein Map

  11. First Recorded Outbreak of Ebola • A small village (Yambuku) in Northern Zaire, Africa

  12. Areas of recent outbreaks, Zaire, Sudan, Gabon, Nigeria, Liberia, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Kenya Legend: Villages in the countries

  13. 1995 Outbreak!! • Alice, TX– 2 Cynomolgus monkeys imported from the Philippines are discovered to contain the deadly virus.

  14. Ribavirin Treatment...antiviral drug, supportive therapy, and rehydration

  15. C Y A N O V I R I N Crystal Structure Extracted from blue-green algae

  16. cDNA • Reverse genetics.. isolating RNA from Ebola

  17. Lab Accidents • Most recent lab accident was in Russia (May 2004)

  18. African Ebola Awareness Poster:
