Grade percentages for each subject: • 40% Assessments • 30% Quizzes • 25% Classwork • 5% Homework • Recovery will be offered on unit assessments. Grading
Students who score a 69 or below must retake their assessment (and they will be provided 1-2 study sessions before the retake). Students who score a 70-79 have the option to retake, and mustattend study sessions to be given the opportunity to retake the assessment. (We typically do ‘lunch n’ learns’ or morning/homeroom study sessions). For quizzes, we do retakes on a case by case basis. Test Recovery
Class Dojo- an online system for keeping points based upon behaviors set up by our team. Points will be redeemed for privileges and treats. Parent access codes have been sent home. • Students are rewarded points for: making a great connection, showing great hallway behavior/lunchroom/bathroom, on task, helping others, leadership, showing teamwork, PAWS Ticket and working hard • Students may also lose points for: Disrespect, off task, poor hallway/lunchroom/bathroom, disturbing other, talking out of turn and too talkative Behavior System
Homework will be given Monday-Thursday. • Monday – Reading with Science/S.S. content • Tuesday – Reading and Math • Wednesday – Reading • Thursday – Reading and Math. • Homework should not take more than 60 minutes per night. • Children practice math facts consistently throughout the year • Students will have occasional Science and Social Studies homework when necessary

Students will focus on developing reading comprehension strategies and communicating effectively in writing and in speaking through the Lucy Calkin’s Readers Workshop. • The Common Core RELA standards are divided into strands. They include: • reading for literature • reading for information • reading foundational skills • writing • speaking and listening • language. • Skills for each standard are taught through mini-lessons. • Practice and individual/group work is done through mid-workshop conferences. Writing and grammar instruction is taught through the Lucy Calkin’s Writer’s Workshop format including mini lessons and designated writing time every day. • We will focus on narratives, research based informational writing and opinion pieces. • Students practice writing skills through consistent writing instruction and a designated individual writing and sharing time. Grammar is taught in mini lessons based on our standards and students are expected to apply these standards into their daily writing pieces.
Spelling is introduced through our Words Their Way words study program- students learn sorting words into categories to find patterns and sounds; hands on developmentally appropriate word work is applied during writer’s workshop.
We follow a station rotation format • Students begin their block with spiral review question. All levels will receive this in order to help prepare them for milestones. • Students will rotate between four stations, every day. • All unit minilessons will be taught at the teacher station in a small group setting. • Stations are consistent but the content within the stations will change as needed based on our units, but they will always consist of technology, unit practice, spiral review and a minilesson.
4th to 5th Grade Power Standards: What your child needs to know walking into 5th grade • Multiplication • Division • Place Value • Decimals • Add/Subtract fractions and whole numbers with like denominators • Factors & multiples • Formula for finding area & perimeter • How to solve multi-step word problems • Parallel & perpendicular lines • Understand relative sizes in measurement (metric & customary)
Science will focus onPBL(Project Based Learning) and Social Studies will help to support the reading workshops. • We will always begin the units with vocabulary. • Science and Social Studies will be integrated into RELA throughout the year. • With our new Chromebooks and PBL Design Lab students will get a lot of hands on research design practice.
