  3. Yayoi • Ruled by warriors. • Under the warriors followed • Famers, artisans, and servants of the warriors • Warriors received a portion of the rice harvest for protecting • They buried their leaders in tombs made of dirt called Kofun Kofun

  4. Prince Shotoku • Created a strong central government • Created a constitution • Wanted to learn from China • Built Buddhist temples and monasteries • Built Horyuji- World’s oldest wooden temple • Began the Taika- or great change- divided Japan into provinces with officials- think of our states

  5. Shinto • Was based on nature spirits • Animism- believed all natural things have spirits- wind, trees, rocks, mountains, ect…. • Japanese worshipped at shrines • Shinto- means way of the spirits

What happened to the Power?We have seen this before…. • In the AD 800’s power weakened • Emperors were children • Rich didn’t have to pay taxes and ruled their piece of land- What other empire fell when the wealthy didn’t pay taxes • Regents refused to give up power • What is a Regent? Have we seen this before?

Rise of the Shogun • Emperor Kammu of Japan built the city Heian, which later became Kyoto- It was modeled after the Chinese city Chang’an • Weak rulers • Regents took over for young ones • Geimpi- Civil war occurs • Minamoto Yoritomo wins • Emperor afraid of take over- give Yoritome the title of shogun!

  11. Japanese Religion • Pure Land Buddhism- happy life after death- have faith in Amida and chant name- • Zen Buddhism- inner peace and self-control, martial arts, meditation • Shinto- was concerned with daily life • Never a need to chose one! I like them all!

  12. Chinese Influence • Japan borrowed writing • Japan borrowed architecture • Calligraphy • Buddhism • Some farming • Like a good neighbor----until Mongols tried to borrow Japan…. You know you want to say it… Like a good neighbor, the Chinese are there! Please no Mongols!

  13. Japanese Culture • Role of Women- Explain this to your mom! • Traded Swords, Lacquered Goods and Copper for silk, dyes, pepper, books, and our favorite (fine China- porcelain) • What did farmers grow? • Rice, Millet, Wheat, and Barley
