Registration MATERIALS • given to current students • Registration handbook • Personal copy of transcript • Registration card • West specific Course Offerings list • Forms and applications • Online registration instructions • Rising 9th graders will receive these materials from their middle schools

Registration timelineRising 9th Graders • February 25th-March 15th • Online registration period for Middle School 8th graders • Most questions and concerns can be answered by MS Counselors • March 22nd • Middle School will deliver registration cards to High schools • Any changes or requests will need to come to us after this date

  5. Registration timelineCurrent Students • Thursday & Friday February 14th & 15th • Student Q&A with counselors during lunches • Monday & Tuesday February 18th-21st • registration for students w/o math • friday February 22nd – March 28th • All other students registration through Math classes

Current Student due dates • Registration card & forms– DUE to math teacher by: • February 20th A day classes • February 21st B day classes • Non-math students registration card & forms • Due February 18th - 20th (during appointment) • Online/registration card choices must match • Student/counselor will finalize at 1-on-1 conference • student will no longer be able to edit without talking to counselor

  7. Graduation Requirement Minimums • 2 electives must be any combination of CTE, Arts, or Second Language • 2 additional electives from CTE, JROTC, Arts Education or any other subject area

  8. Science • Earth/Environmental • Biology ** • A physical science (e.g. Chemistry, Physics or Physical Science) • One additional science (e.g. Anatomy, Physics, Global Science Issues, AP sciences) (Levels include regular, honors, seminar and AP)

  9. Social studies • World History ** • Civics and Economics • American History I and II or AP U.S. History and one additional course (Levels include regular, honors, seminar, AP)

Course Levels • Regular- Written assignments are shorter, have more check points; discussions are shorter, more structured; daily review of assignments, more homework checks, most reading done in class • No added GPA weight value • Honors- Focus on high levels of thinking; require self-motivation and ability to complete outside reading; little review; exhibit independent thinking, a strong work ethic; additional reading, writing and research assignments. Level IV or V on EOG’s as guideline. • .5 added GPA weight value • Seminar- Expect more depth, creativity, breadth; regular writing assignments with high expectations; emphasis on interpretation and analysis; provides less structure than a traditional honors class; most/all reading is done at home. Level IV or V on EOG’s and AIG as guideline. • .5 added GPA weight value • Advanced Placement- college level writing expectations; high level analysis; college level text; academically gifted, self-disciplined and highly motivated; significantly increased reading outside of class time, writing and research assignments compared to the honors/seminar levels. Ready to be successful at college level. • 1 added GPA weight value

Career Center • Available to rising Juniors and Seniors • JUNIORS receive priority for CTE 2-year programs • Cosmetology ($350; 600 hours/yr including nights & weekends; limited spots) • Culinary Arts ($150) • Automotive / Collision • Health Science (pre-req “B” in Biology) • Standard travel time can be 25-30 minutes • Standard number of courses when combining West and CC is “7”. • 8 courses can be requested, but may not fit • Requires course at 8am at CC

Dual Enrollment • Forsyth Tech • Must be at least 16 with 3.0 GPA to be eligible • Must be enrolled at West for two full periods • Courses count for both high school and college credit • Begins your permanent college transcript • Course are transferrable to 4-year colleges with a “C” or better • Tuition and books are no cost; must pay fees only • Application required – inquire during registration meeting

Early Graduation - not appropriate for everyone…must submit and be approved during registration process for following year • Repeating Courses – you may choose to retake a course you have failed in order to replace the F with the newly earned grade • Credit Recovery – an online option to recover credit in a course you failed by earning a Pass or Fail (can impact NCAA athletic eligibility).

Selecting Courses • Must choose 8 courses and 4 alternates both ONLINE and on CARD • List alternates in order of preference • Choose 7 courses only if planning to attend Career Center • Forms (for current students) • Career Center Travel • Service to School and Community (Juniors & Seniors only) • Study Seminar (Seniors Only) • Must have at least 3 AP courses, 5 HN courses, or a combination. Complete form but do not list on registration card. Not scheduled until summer. Assigned to a classroom – not Media Center

  17. COURSERECOMMENDATIONS • Online teacher recommendations • Entered into PowerSchool by 1st & 2nd semester teachers by February 15th • Can be viewed by student and counselors • Teacher recommendations are key!

Important Points • Balance is essential for mental health! • Just because every teacher may recommend an HN or AP course for you doesn’t mean that you should do so in every department area • Always keep in mind your extra-curricular activities commitments • Athletics • Job • Hobbies • Talk to teachers; ask about electives in areas of interest
