The A.D.A.W. • What:A test of writing skills administered in the fifth, seventh, and tenth grades. • When: Tested in February of each year. • How: All four modes of writing (narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive) are tested at the same time. Students don’t know which mode they will receive.

  3. Scoring the A.D.A.W. The ADAW is scored both holistically and technically. • Holistically:The paper’s four compositional elements (purpose, organization, content, audience) are graded. • Technically: The paper’s three analytical elements (sentence formation, mechanics, grammar and usage) are graded.

  4. P.O.C.A. POCA is an acronym for the four elements of holistic grading. = Purpose for writing (mode) = Organization (graphic org.) = Content = Audience

  5. Modes of Writing • Narrative Writing:The telling of a fictional or non-fictional story. • Descriptive Writing: The clear description of people, places, objects, or events using appropriate details. • Expository Writing:The presenting of reasons, explanations, information, or steps in a process. • Persuasive Writing:The presentation of reasons and examples to influence action or thought.

  6. Student Grades • Score of 1 = No understanding of writing task • Score of 2 = Minimal understanding • Score of 3 = Sufficient understanding • Score of 4 = Thorough understanding

  7. WANTED: A Score of 3 or 4 from YOU
