It’s not a device, it’s me! Klaas Wierenga Klaas.Wierenga@SURFnet.nl SURFnet bv Lisbon, May 24th, 2000
People want to…. • Get access to their company network whenever, whereever & however • Talk to their colleagues, friends, family • Meet new people with similar interests • Therefore, we need a virtual representation of a physical identity (where am I, where is she, who else is here?), ultimately we may just want to communicate with such a virtual presence • ‘Populating the web’ and building communities
But there is much more… • Tunnel software • Altavista tunnel, F-secure VPN+, PGPnet, IPsec • Annotation services • Blogger • E-mail • USENET News • Bulletin boards • SMS!
But how about standards? • IMPP • CC/PP • MobileIP • CellularIP • VRML • LDAP • SIP • WebDAV • IPsec • …
Testcommunities • Web-centric • EduSite • portal for teachers in higher education • SKiN • information for network managers in the SURFnet constituency • IM-centric • GigaPort GPRS-pilot user group
Conclusion • There is a definite need for a sense of presence and awareness on the Internet as the popularity of the examples show, if we really want to put this forward however we need a standards based approach
