  3. 2 • In bright light, circular muscles are contracted, radial muscles are relaxed. • In dim light, circular muscles are relaxed, radial muscles are contracted. • 3 D – Bright light strikes the retina, the circular muscles in the iris contract, the radial muscles relax, the pupil constricts. • 4 The automatic adjustment of the size of the pupil is a reflex action. The intensity of light that falls on the retina is the stimulus for this reflex action. The iris is the effector. • When too much light enters the eye, the retina can be damaged. When too little light enters the eye, the photoreceptor cells will not be stimulated. • In dim light, the radial muscles contract, the pupil will increase in size or dilate. In bright light, the circular muscles will contract, and the pupil will decrease in size or constrict.
