  1. Obedience to Authority

  2. Obedience to authority: Lecture objectives • Visit the original Milgram experiment and a recent replication conducted at Santa Clara University.

  3. What to look out for: • In video: • Basic procedures • How obedience is rationalized (especially in SCU) • Influence processes • In book: • Why do people obey according to Milgram? • Identify the variations (experiments) of Milgram and how that impacts obedience rates. • These two goals allow one to make applications (increase or decrease obedience) since one knows the why and when of obedience to authority.

  4. Obedience replication comparisons • Milgram and Burger (45 years later) produced nearly the same results; (so did the Pratkanis replication of Asch 50 years later) • Exception: Burger did not show lower rates when a dissenting confederate was included. Some differences: • Burger’s confederate said, “I can’t do it.” • Milgram used two confederates who said: • “Not participating because the learner was complaining.” • “Not willing to shock that man against his will.”

  5. Obedience to authority experiments • Show Stanford prison experiment video • Show Burger replications parts 1 & 2
