  4. Why this? Why now?-Context • New GCSEs and student wellbeing • Introduction of a three year Key Stage Four • School Improvement Plan 2017-2018 • Study of structures at Trust, City and National levels • Staff feedback on training and development • Portsmouth Education Partnership-Teacher Recruitment and Retention

  6. Priory compared to other city/local schools • In 2017 the highest performing school in the city has fewer teaching hours a week than Priory’s proposal. • In 2017 the lowest performing school in the city has more teaching hours a week than Priory’s proposal. • In 2017 the highest performing school in the Trust has the same model as the Priory proposal.

  7. Our proposal Is a reduction in the school week of 1.7 hours. If we only factor in workshops and Period 7s we provide to our year 10 and 11 students receive an additional 114 hours a year.

  8. Where would the time come from? Year 7 and 8- 1 hour between PE and DT over two weeks and same amount of science as other Trust schools. Year 9 and 10-(Three year KS4) 25 minutes less a week in option subjects Year 11-(Final year of two year KS4) One PE lesson and one PSHE lesson

  11. Guided Learning Hours (GLH) • Guided Learning Hours for GCSEs is between 120-140hours • With our proposed structure a 3 year KS4 will receive 257 hours. • Our current Year 10 have a 2 year at KS4 so we would ensure every GCSE had the same lesson time as our current Year 11 -205 hours.

  12. Evidence from case studies - positives • Advocates suggest shorter school days result in more time for pupils to • Engage in extra-curricular activities after school: • Take on part-time work • Spend quality time with family and friends • Relax! • Attend personal/medical appointments without missing school • Coordinated pupil free time lead to more effective CPD, improved staff well-being and thus better teaching and consequently pupil performance

  13. Student Voice • Initial consultations with students (197) has shown: • They are positive about the changes; • Over 90% have indicated that they would engage in extra-curricular activities on the Wednesday; • They want to be involved in the selection of new activities to be provided on a Wednesday; • They feel secure that they do not lose out and instead have a more enriched curriculum.

  14. In In conclusion… conclusion • Increase in GCSE hours • Expanded extra curricular offer • Targeted, additional support and intervention for students • More time for higher quality planning • Support for homework completion • Acknowledgement of huge demands on staff and students.
